This is outrageous.. Not a single person on my flight is masked up while we’re in the middle of a double pandemic (Covid + Hantavirus). I politely informed the flight attendant that this is a super spreader event. She just shrugged and walked away. I've already filed a formal complaint with the FAA and CDC. This is reckless and cannot stand. Masks save lives, the science is settled on that.

BREAKING: "The risk of hantavirus to the general public remains very, very low." Admiral Brian Christine, MD — Assistant Secretary for Health sets the record straight on the risk of hantavirus to the public: "The Andes variant of this virus does not spread easily, and it requires prolonged, close contact with someone who is already symptomatic." "Even so, we have taken this situation very seriously from the very start."

Two Americans found to be infected infected. One got sick on the repatriation flight like the French passenger did Passengers: April 6 — Dutch . April 11 — Dutch . April 28 — British . April 28 — German . May 2 — German . May 6 — Swiss. May 10 — 1 French May 10 — 2 Americans
HHS@HHSGov

HHS through @ASPRgov and @CDCgov is supporting @StateDept in the repatriation of 17 American citizens from the MV Hondius cruise ship affected by the Andes variant of hantavirus. All 17 are currently en route via @StateDept airlift to the United States, with two of the passengers travelling in the plane's biocontainment units out of an abundance of caution. One passenger currently has mild symptoms and another passenger tested mildly PCR positive for the Andes virus. As of now, the airlift will transport passengers to the ASPR Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Center (RESPTC) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska before taking the passenger with mild symptoms to a second RESPTC at its final destination. Upon arrival at each facility, each individual will undergo clinical assessment and receive appropriate care and support based on their condition.

40 days from April 6 (1st symptoms for patient zero) is May 16. 30 people left the ship to get on commercials flights to 23 separate countries on April 24-25. It’s totally unclear whether they have all been traced and how sequestered they might be. 1.

Spoke to @AndyMacNews @livenowfox — this #Hantavirus outbreak is a canary in the coal mine. We got lucky this time that this started on a cruise ship— that is why it was detected this fast. The cases clustered together in time/space. The next time, we won’t be that lucky. A future importation of #AndesVirus to a big city could be more complicated. And there are other pathogens that fit this pattern around the world (long incubation, human-human transmission, vague early symptoms). Remember that Ebola virus had only had outbreaks of 500 or less until the big one in 2014 that spread in large dense cities causing over 28500 cases and over 11k deaths

Let’s say the quiet part out loud: there WILL be ongoing additional CONFIRMED US infections of the Andes hantavirus due to the incompetent administration. Anyone who insists otherwise is a minimizer and doesn’t understand how viral transmission and incubation periods work.

May 11, 2026 -We now have 10 hantavirus cases -1 apparent 'Patient Zero' and 9 Human-to-human Generation 2 cases -3 deaths: Patient Zero, his wife, and 1 other -The window for new symptomatic Generation 2 cases is until about May 22nd -Cases appearing beyond about May 22 would be predicted to be a Gen 2 to Gen 3 H-to-H spread - In a hospital setting, H-to-H transmission is very rare -From peer reviewed paper: "These data suggest that there was no person-to-person transmission among healthcare workers during a recent outbreak of HPS in Southern Chile in 1997, despite the inconsistent use of any precautions against transmission." -Reference for above: journalofhospitalinfection.com/article/S0195-… -No change in the extremely low probability for a wider public health problem

Due to long incubation periods, it looks like we're going to have wait at least another few weeks just to find out if this Andes Hantavirus outbreak has spread beyond the passengers of the ship: "If there is to be a new generation of [Andes Hantavirus] cases they should appear, ON AVERAGE, at about May 19 -- or 22 days from Gen 2." BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THERE'S NO RISK UNTIL THEN. So let's think about this from a risk mitigation standpoint, ok? Assume the worst while you hope for the best. That's the smart play. So if you're walking through an AIRPORT or TRAIN STATION anytime over the next two months, it won't kill you to put on a gosh darn N95 -- and it might even save your life. Probably totally unnecessary, sure, but if you've ever played the state lottery, you've invested your own money in significantly worse odds than there are of this extraordinarily lethal virus spreading beyond just the ship's passengers. (I'm not telling you what to do, big boy. I'm just saying the mask won't kill you. Totally up to you.)
Dr Steven Quay@quay_dr

Andes Hantavirus analysis: This chart suggests Cases 2-8 were all a single H-to-H jump from Case 1, since all of the incubation periods cluster at 22 days from Case 1 symptoms. We are now 13 days from the 'mean' date of symptoms from Cases 2-8. If there is to be a new generation of cases they should appear, on average, at about May 19 or 22 days from Gen 2. Strict protocol would support a 42-day quarantine from last contact or about June 21st for all exposed individuals.

Prof. Joseph Allen confirms the Trump administration is actively hiding how easily this new Hantavirus spreads. He reveals cases where people caught it just by saying hello in passing at a short party. Washington is intentionally underplaying the threat, risking massive spread.

Not unexpected, but a not big deal either. Andes Hantavirus is terrible at human to human transmission. So it is likely to phase itself out before reaching anything close to "pandemic" levels...
