IRCTC’s algorithm can be weird! Got a RAC seat with solo female. Day before yesterday, I was travelling from Delhi to Bhatinda and ended up with a RAC seat. When I reached my berth, a woman in her early 30s was already sleeping there. I woke her up to confirm if she was the one sharing the seat with me. We both sat at opposite corners of the side lower berth. Soon we started chatting and gradually became comfortable, talking about our lives and work. Then came the strange coincidence, my name is Saurabh and hers was Surbhi 😅. On top of that, we had a surprising number of things in common: our field of work, college background, and a lot more. Not sure how we ended up sharing the same seat with so many similarities. Since it was an overnight journey, I made sure she was comfortable and asked her to get some rest. I usually sleep quite late anyway, so she rested for most of the journey until her station arrived. The RAC system itself is problematic, and it becomes even more uncomfortable when two strangers of opposite genders have to share a berth. For men it may still be manageable, but for solo female travellers it can be difficult. She told me her last RAC experience wasn’t pleasant, and she had even considered cancelling this trip but had to travel. When her station arrived, we bid eachother goodbyes, and I went on to sleep for rest of my journey. #IndianRailways

EXPRESSWAY CONCERNS The truck accident on the Mumbai-Pune #expressway on Tuesday evening, which leaked propylene gas and caused a major 32-hour shutdown of India's busiest expressway by traffic volume and daily revenues, is a major indictment of India’s civil defence and emergency preparedness. That no one perished in the accident or the 32 hours that followed is a blessing from above. The tanker was finally removed from the expressway last night at 8 PM, and traffic has still not returned to normal this morning. (Thursday 5th Feb 10am) That it could take 36 hours or more to bring this chemical spill under control shows that in the case of a "26-11 Mumbai" type of attack, lakhs of Indians stuck on the roads and in these strategic installations could have perished. (See Image depicting installations) This expressway connects India’s richest economic corridor and has some of India’s most strategic assets. I am not even considering the thousands of crores in fuel, lost productivity or passenger inconvenience that we went through. The question that must be asked is, did the government fail in its disaster management plan? Or was there none? Why was there no effort by the Central or state government to call in the Corps of Army Engineers? or position fire brigades, ambulances etc ? As a Mumbaikar who lived through that horror of 26/11 and the 26/7 deluge, and has seen other terror attacks & civil disturbances across India, the traffic jams and the chaos of the last 24/36 hours have only brought home to roost how unprepared India is for civil disasters if they occur, a la Bhopal, or the 26 July Mumbai deluge, or, God forbid, if another 26/11 were ever to happen. We live in a dangerous world, and terrorism and natural calamities strike at places we can never be certain of. Imagine a scenario where terrorists cause a toxic spill and block the expressway in this fashion and then attack or sabotage key installations and/or military installations at both ends of the expressway? Imagine how helpless we will be? There were no alternate routes, no excavation plan, no emergency shutdown, no civil defence measures, no medical protocols, no firefighting preparedness on site, no emergency ambulance facilities; the list is endless. This is NOT scaremongering; it is only to draw attention to how unprepared we are. I hope this is some food for thought for public planners, strategic architects, bureaucrats and political leaders. ACT NOW, IT MAY BE TOO LATE THE NEXT TIME.
