Basic guarantees to follow existing law are not "concessions," despite what White House would like us to believe. If anything, this letter is just an admission that they aren’t following the law right now. If the White House wants to negotiate on DHS funding, it has to start with real reform, not superficial guarantees to endorse current law.

DHS SHUTDOWN OFFER. @NewsHour has obtained this letter from the WH to Senators outlining their offer for ending the shutdown. Read here. But basic points: - Expand use, oversight of body cameras - Limit immigration enforcement at schools, churches, sensitive locations (voluntary) - Enforce use of visible ID for DHS law enforcement. Officers must state their agency and identification when asked. - Will not deport US citizens, as per the law and will codify that US citizens should not be detained except if a law is violated. This is the document I unredacted on the House floor. It confirms numerous lies by Trump, including that Trump never expelled Epstein from Mar-A-Lago - despite his repeated claims that he did. It is also proof of the DOJ’s massive cover-up because there was no basis to redact it other than to protect the President. DOJ still hasn’t disclosed 3 million pages of the Epstein Files. Republicans have repeatedly said the SAVE Act is the most important piece of legislation they have. Yet they cannot point to a single statistic to back up that claim. Why? Because there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud. There is, however, mountains of data that shows that the proof of citizenship requirement of the SAVE Act would disenfranchise millions of Americans. That’s why it’s important to them. Ten months after being unjustly detained - and 10 months too late - high school student Dylan Lopez Contreras has finally been released. While I’m glad he’s finally home, his case is a reminder that thousands of other children and young people remain in ICE custody across the country. These detentions do nothing to make us safer. Their only purpose is to terrorize our communities and attack our most vulnerable neighbors.

Deporting Rafael Rubio is an outrage. He has committed no crime and has been a dedicated public servant who was only detained while following the rules. Nobody is better off for deporting him. Not him, and not our city. I was proud to stand up for him when he was originally detained, and I will keep fighting for his release along with @SpeakerMenin.

Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal, who aided US Special Forces during the war in Afghanistan, died shortly after being taken into ICE custody. His death is a tragedy, and part of a truly disturbing trend. He is the 43rd person to die in ICE custody during the Trump administration. 43!! We’ve seen the cruelty ICE officers demonstrate when they know they’re on camera. It’s obvious that behind closed doors, they’re even worse.

Trump and @DHSgov have made the asylum process as challenging and inhumane as possible. Masked ICE agents are detaining asylum seekers at their court appointments. Even though they have no criminal record. We don’t need to detain lawful asylum seekers who by definition show up to court (where they are arrested). It’s cruel and soulless.
