Officials said close to 4000 acres have been burned, and the flames are still active. This is tonight off of US-27 and Pines Blvd. Fires in the Everglades are a natural, necessary phenomenon that replenish the ecosystem by recycling nutrients, clearing dead vegetation to improve water flow, and maintaining the mosaic of habitats.

Idaho: Incredible work being done up on the Salmon Challis National Forest. They completed thousands of acres of prescribed fire this last week. You can see the vast amounts of dead standing fuels they are trying to mitigate. “Salmon-Challis National Forest staff successfully implemented 2,200 acres of prescribed fire, 13 miles east of Mackay, Idaho. This prescribed burn is part of the South Lost River Restoration Project. The purpose of this project is to improve forest health stand conditions and wildlife habitat by introducing fire back into a landscape that has missed historic fire return intervals. Missed fire intervals have led to declining forest stand health resulting from high tree densities and tight closed canopies. Using fire under prescribed conditions will result in canopy mortality and ground vegetation reduction that will improve stand health and wildlife habitat. Fire severities are expected to vary across prescribed fire area with some areas experiencing high severity fire which may result in 2-20 acre stand openings due to fire mortality.” Thanks to the individual who shared this view of the burn.

Large Everglades wildfire burning near Pembroke Pines. Smoke pushing toward the Holly Lake community 200 acres burning. 0% contained. Fire-Rescue staged along the Holly Lake perimeter. No evacuations ordered yet, but crews are in position if the fire moves closer.
