Stripe offered to acquire us for $1.2 billion when we had $2M in revenue. Today, we've raised $330M at an $8B valuation and reached $1B ARR. We could've died three times during this journey. This is the story I've never told anyone before:

@mercebent Personal phones. My takeaway is those normal people don’t like ai taking over their phones. Might be Apple UX, not sure, but ai has a bad rep that I hear in many discussions with younger people.

ai has a huge ideological problem. a lot of mainstream users, i think a vocal minority?, absolutely hate ai. i've spoken with a lot of CEOs who can't even say the word "ai" because their users revolt.

When vibe coding started getting popular, some people said, “we won’t need designers anymore, you can just design things yourself.” The opposite happened. I talked to a well respected designer friend today who said freelance design rates are getting more expensive, and hiring a full-time designer in the U.S. now starts at $150K. He shared a framing I liked: "Teams understand the models are going to make everyone 7/10 designers. Which does eliminate the need for low end of the market. But if you can help someone ship 9 or 10/10 design you’ve never been more valuable because it’s now one of the core means of differentiation." AI made bad design easier. It also made great design harder & more expensive.

@brennanjp true! but if you look at products like Retro (or Stories), i still think there's a desire for *a lightweight way to keep up with friends' lives* and the mainstream space for that is all but vacant now

friends simply aren't engaging enough (lol) to survive on today's social platforms...

I’ve been blessed to make friends all over North America from living tons of places / being quite social. I’m horrible at maintaining communication if I’m not seeing people often in person. This feels like a nudge to circle back with anyone who you think is just genuinely awesome.

Random Anecdote: I have one friend who’s call maxing all his friends every Sunday. This guy like clock work calls me every other Sunday basically and we just catch up on what’s going on and what we’re up to. We’ve become even better friends since he’s been doing it. Short story, call your friends.
