His college created the Manjunath Shanmugam Trust in his name to fight corruption. Some men die because they refused to look the other way. India forgets them too quickly.

The BJP government’s Transgender Persons Amendment Bill is a brazen attack on the Constitutional rights and identity of transgender people. This regressive bill: - strips transgender people of their ability to self identify, violating a Supreme Court judgement - ⁠wipes out the diverse cultural identities of communities across India - ⁠forces trans people to undergo dehumanizing examinations by a medical board - ⁠introduces criminal penalties and surveillance without safeguards The BJP government hasn’t consulted the trans community and brought a bill which stigmatises rather than protects them. The Constitution protects every Indian’s right to life, liberty, identity, and dignity. This BJP government is violating our Constitution and destroying India’s rich history of honouring transgender communities in pursuit of its narrow ideas. The Congress Party unequivocally opposes this Bill.

👉 I oppose the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026, as this bill was introduced in Parliament without due consultation with transgender persons and other stakeholders. This itself shows the callous attitude of the Modi government. 👉 This Bill is not a reform; it is a regression. It takes away what the Constitution and the Supreme Court of India have already guaranteed. The Bill deletes the right to self-determination. 👉 Many transgender persons have already spoken about the immense barriers they face in securing a simple ID card. By adding more bureaucratic hurdles, we are not protecting them; we are exhausting them into invisibility. 👉 The Bill must be referred to the Standing Committee for detailed and inclusive consultation with the transgender community and all stakeholders.
