@theFIREescaper @123reg Are you on BT/plusnet/something else that uses BT's network? Seems to be an issue talking to godaddy servers from withim BT's network.

@aidThompsin Looks like YouTube’s “personalised” subscription mode is not very good. I just went to subscribe to find I was already subscribed. I haven’t seen any of your content in so long I didn’t think I was.

@xgigglypuff Drinking, sure, but purchasing outright? As in, it’s needed to make certain types of raw cheeses, why would it be stupid to purchase it if you do not intend to drink it unprocessed?

Ok I’m saying it. Cancel me. Purchasing and drinking raw milk is genuinely stupid. There are no scientifically-proven health benefits. You are paying more money for something that puts you at higher risk for dangerous bacteria. I do not respect your opinion.

And the @unity InputSystemUIInputModule saga continues. Clicks are not working correctly either. Has anyone actually tested this before release? Who thought it’s a good idea to write a module that changes important behaviours of UI input handling? #unity #gamedev Wednesdays…

If your tests are allowing for public APIs to be knowingly broken, they are not worth the storage they are written to. I had to embed the package and remove support for middle and right mouse clicks to fix this, because the design is fundamentally flawed. 4/4.

Firstly, that is not the only API that is broken by this implementation flaw, pressPosition is broken too. Secondly, and I know Unity loves TDD, an implementation *knowingly* breaking a documented public API in use for the best part of a decade cannot be considered a pass. 3/n

What is worse is that looking at the source code, it is *knowingly* broken. It contains multiple comments that state this, and it contains the following comment that basically explains the breakage. 2/n

Yesterday, while having to do an enforced migration to the new @unity Input System, I run into a very odd problem. pressPosition was not being set as expected. After much investigation, I found that the Input module for the UI system is a complete mess. 1/n

@SebAaltonen @ObjectiveCosta I don’t think this needs the qualification of “back then”. The web is still in a horrible state. At least the barely interactive documents back then didn’t use multiple GB of RAM to implement features that native apps had in the late 90’s.

@ObjectiveCosta None of this would have happened if web was in good enough shape back then. Devs wanted something better and they were willing to jump hoops over it. And this forced Apple to release a SDK and the App Store. Later they realized that it was a very good money maker.

@anerdguynow Yeah, same. It also tickles the same parts of the brain, so now that I’ve been a full time developer for more than a decade I find myself not playing games as much as I used to and would like to. That part of my brain is both satisfied and tired when I’m done working.

I get the same dopamine hits when writing code, docs, etc. as I do when playing video games. Is this normal? Do people enjoy their job tasks as much as their leisurely pasttimes?

@anerdguynow I usually find that when this happens the search service is actually crashing, emitting events to the event log about it as well. Of course, searching for any of the errors in the log never yields anything worthwhile…

The Windows 11 Start Menu is comically bad. This machine has a $1600 Core i9 CPU and 128 GB of RAM and this is the performance I often get. What is going on in Redmond?

@anerdguynow Definitely credit the junior dev. It doesn’t need to be confrontational in any way either: “It was X’s idea actually, excellent work”.

In a meeting, a senior dev gives you (another senior dev) credit for an idea that was actually that of a jr dev on your team. The jr dev quickly clarifies it was their idea. What are your next steps? Leave it be? Confirm it was the jr dev's idea? Followup via DMs later?

@BenSimsTech @SheriefFYI Considering the blatant shader variant explosion there makes me wonder whether they have reliable data on which variants are actually being used.

@SheriefFYI CoD is one of the most bloated games with an insane download size which keep getting bigger. It is absolutely not 10 minutes to download and play, and it's shader compilation takes 5-10 minutes or more with every update. I literally uninstalled it because of constant 90gb updates

"shader precompilation takes 30 seconds to a minute" this user is either trolling, delusional, does not actually own a PC they game on, or on some future supercomputer from an alternate reality not bound by the limits of physics.
Alkaline@violet_rancor

@SheriefFYI @FPRobber ... so like 30 seconds to a minute? The only game in recent memory that takes a decent amount of time to compile is Call of Duty and well... it's CoD It's literally 10 minutes for me to download and play Elden Ring vs 45+ to run to the store and buy it

I appreciate the discourse about arcade games not having micro transactions. But they literally were built on micro transactions. See: Gauntlet.

@Kev_Bayliss Got it in the left ear. Around 5kHz. Thankfully, being that high it’s pretty easy to ignore, I can’t imagine how bad it would be had it been in the low mid frequencies.

#Unity folks, sense check - we've had the advanced Search backend disabled by default in Settings for a long time now, I'm asking a few studios about their usage and would like some more informal thoughts from you too please - Are you using it? Feedback in thread please.
