Speculation: Somebody told Elon Tesla needs to make a traditional pickup because there isn’t enough demand for Cybertruck to keep production above breakeven. Elon said “What if there’s plenty of demand, but at $60K, not $80K?” Well, I know one way to settle the bet…
Elon Musk@elonmusk

@BigImpactHumans @Tesla Depends on how much demand we see at this price level

@ICannot_Enough Plain English please Mr. Stephenson. I think he's saying simple econ terms: price at MR=MC. so does this mean after a couple years they're bringing Cogs down?

@ICannot_Enough There's no way they created special seats, special suspension, special bed floor, special audio config, etc just for ten days of sales. This was an introductory price/market test that may or may not change slightly after the initial period but this model is here to stay.

@ICannot_Enough That’s not the relevant question: If $TSLA offered a a $60K traditional pickup loaded with Cybertruck’s features and benefits vs a $60K $TSLA Cybertruck which would sell more? Model Y is a traditional CUV and it’s the best-selling vehicle in the world.

@ICannot_Enough They would’ve been fired and told Tesla is an ai and robotics company now, were existing the car sales business for transportation as a service. I think this is purely trying to recoup the losses of the assembly line

@ICannot_Enough That would be cool and all, but how is the average consumer going to know that there’s a 60k truck for the next 10 days? How does this true test demand?

Seeing as how that trim is now backlogged till June, I think they found their sweet spot. For all those crying about “only having 10 days” - feel lucky he even told you. The could easily have just changed the price back up today or next week to prevent inevitably angering you people about an even longer backlog then getting investors crying about MORE low margins at end of quarter. Additionally, if you “may” want one it’s $250 bucks. If you decide in 4 months you can’t afford it, it’s a small loss. Poor Elon cannot ever please everyone 😂😂

@ICannot_Enough Problem is, even at an attractive price (which this trim definitely is) many regular folk don't want to drive something so polarizing/attention getting. And what the hell is 10 days gonna tell you? It's a bad sample.

Econ 101. Tesla is testing price elasticity. If demand goes up significantly (like expected for vehicle market) it will lower cost and allow margin at lower prices. If demand does not go up the CT will be a luxury low volume product. That’s why he set a 10 day deadline and engaged FOMO

@ICannot_Enough 10 days though is a moronic decision. no way there are enough sales in 10 days to determine anything.

@ICannot_Enough The cybertruck missed the principle of basics. It was marketed as a showoff piece, its tremendous abilities and versatility were regrettably underhyped.

@ICannot_Enough Disagree. Disclosing sales strategy (like what Elon did) is altering the actual demand. If this is the case. this is not a bet, but a manipulation.

@ICannot_Enough It is possible that they are testing demand at below $50k, then building the next version of the Cybertruck (or an SUV shape) accordingly. How many people actually buy it at this price will tell the story.

@ICannot_Enough Or, someone told Elon that they will never sell many CTs at any price since it has become a symbol of the what many don’t like about our current political environment. To which he said, hold my beer…

@ICannot_Enough Almost 2 million got on the list for Cybertrucks before production. 100% knew exactly what the truck would look like so that didn't stop things. Even if 50% of those people were never going to buy that's still a million. Tesla failed on $$/spec but the new offer is great.

@DBurkland @EZebroni Still waiting on my 6 seat 300+ mile awd truck for $50k. I’ll spot them the inflation even though the delays were on them, so $60k. Everyone said it was impossible but I believe. It’s coming. /s
