Excited to share that I’ve joined @a16z as an investment partner! As part of the American Dynamism practice, I’ll be working alongside @davidu , @KTmBoyle, @espricewright and team to invest in visionary companies supporting our national interest. More below, but TLDR we have an extraordinary opportunity to invest in the technology that will (and must) enhance our national security, industrial productivity, and public health. And although American Dynamism has evolved into a full-blown movement, we’ve just barely scratched the surface. If you are an entrepreneur who shares our mission, please reach out! Thank you to everyone (including @amishjani, the @FirstMarkCap team, and their incredible portfolio founders) who have supported me thus far. More below and more to come 🇺🇸 ~ In recent months, I’ve had dozens of conversations about my jump to a16z. Here’s some context for those I’ve yet to get to. My journey began with a simple observation about VC: much of the “low-hanging fruit” has been picked. The power of software is well-understood, and our asset class has grown around it, increasing competition. The best investors (like @FirstMarkCap!) will successfully back the best startups building AI-native solutions and deliver attractive returns. But many others will either 1) overpay just to win, or 2) rationalize investment in underwhelming companies (what I call “SaaS incrementalism”). Both will result in tepid returns. To find transformative opportunities, VCs need to forge ahead and go where digital innovation previously hasn’t. But where to go? I stand by the cliché, “necessity is the mother of invention,” i.e., we should look where innovation urgently needs to happen. Interestingly, the sectors most critical to our national interest are also most underserved by software. So I found my answers: aerospace, defense, energy, public safety, education, housing, supply chain, and manufacturing. The problem with these domains – far from the safety and familiarity of white-collar enterprise SaaS – is that they present new challenges, most notably regulation, labor complexity, and capex intensity (the absence of which made SaaS so attractive since the advent of cloud). But they also present enormous opportunity. Our largest economic sectors have yet to realize the benefits of major technology transformation. AI (from computer vision, to robotics, to agentic automation) dramatically increases the surface area for potential disruption. I determined that success here will require a team of investors to share a mission and risk appetite, and build specialized networks for talent, GTM, and policy. I wanted to work for such a team, and feel lucky to have found one. What began as a pragmatic observation about investing, morphed into a profound desire to invest in the technologies that will define the next century for Americans. The AD team wants to empower the most daring entrepreneurs building in our most critical and overlooked sectors, so if you fit that profile, I’ll hope to connect soon.

Today, at @HadrianInc’s factory of the future we delivered the generational investment required to rebuild our @USNavy shipbuilding capacity, bringing those jobs back to Alabama and putting American skilled laborers back at the center of American strength. A new kind of strategic partnership.

None of this could have happened without the leadership of @POTUS and both chambers of Congress.

Basically every climate fund has pivoted from ecoslop to American Dynamism at this point. Understanding the earth and climate matters, but it's always been a bad financial investment thesis. wsj.com/business/energ…

I am excited to announce Mind Robotics’ $500M financing, co-led by @Accel and @a16z!  Mind is focused on building the world’s leading industrial robotics platform, capable of performing dexterous, variable, and reasoning-intensive tasks. Existing industrial robotics can perform repeatable, dimensionally stable tasks, but a large share of industrial value-add work requires human-like dexterity, adaptation, and physical reasoning that classical robotics cannot address.  We are building AI-powered robots—models, hardware, and deployment infrastructure—that will perform real tasks, in real plants, at real scale.

Ben Horowitz on the necessity of American Dynamism at the dawn of the AI revolution: "There's really been no country in the world that comes close to America at giving people a shot." "When people have a chance to contribute, then they can have an impact. Then they can advance the state of things for everybody." "We won the industrial revolution, and we did that because we had superior technology." "And here we are on the dawn of a new technological revolution, the AI revolution." "Are we going to be able to give people a shot, and continue to advance humanity?" "I think that's an open question right now." @bhorowitz

Turner Caldwell on the three things Tesla taught him that he took with him into the industrials industry: "I'd say there are three big ones... the general, like techno-optimism and what technology can do in these sectors is much higher at Tesla, right?" "The belief that you can innovate on systems that are old and archaic is like at the core of the company." "The other is a general appetite for risk, which enables super fast decision making and enables the teams to move really quickly without being burdened with fear of making the wrong decision." "The last is a clear firm commitment to not giving up on projects that have the outcome. If the outcome is worth it, we, Tesla, will like fight through the challenges of getting to that outcome." "I think what we see, at least in the minerals industry is folks will give it a shot for a year... people have tried to do autonomy and mining for a long time, and generally a lot of companies will just... fail. They'll put it on the shelf." "Tesla does a really good job of just like, barreling through the challenges as long as the outcome is worth it. @tbc415
