A student-athlete turned in a 146-word essay about Rosa Parks — one paragraph, riddled with errors, no sources — and got an A-minus. That single paper helped expose the biggest academic fraud in NCAA history. For 18 years, from 1993 to 2011, a department secretary named Deborah Crowder ran fake courses at the University of North Carolina. @UNC The classes never met. There was no syllabus and no professor. Students turned in one paper per semester. Crowder admitted she never read them. She skimmed introductions and handed out A’s. UNC’s academic counselors steered athletes into these courses each semester, specifying what grades each player needed. Athletes made up 47% of enrollments despite being just 4% of the student body. Rashad McCants, a star on UNC’s 2005 championship team, told ESPN he made the Dean’s List without attending a single class. Ten of fifteen players on that title team were enrolled in paper courses. When whistleblower Mary Willingham revealed that 60% of athletes read at a 4th-to-8th grade level, UNC attacked her publicly and fans sent death threats. She was forced to resign. In October 2014, a 136-page investigation confirmed the scope: 188 fake classes, 3,100 students, 18 years of fraud. And the punishment? In October 2017, the NCAA ruled there were no significant violations. Zero penalties. No vacated wins. No postseason bans. @UNC calls themselves a bastion of academia. How incredibly pathetic.

Always thought my late 20's would be when I would tell my parents that I've bought a house and that I will have a kid. Turns out at 28 I just texted my mum (only way I can communicate with her) that I will go for euthanasia end of the year. Was hit by the traditional barrier of healthy people : "you'll get better". Guess they won't believe it until they have to give their formal approval. Breaks my heart. Everything still feels so surreal #MECFS

@GutOptimized People don’t like solutions that are difficult or require personal accountability. Much easier to carry on as usual, take a bunch of pills, and whine to anyone in ear shot how sick they are.

When I was at my worst with my chronic illness, I was in a facebook support group. It's people mainly into traditional models for chronic pain etc. Everyone endlessly trying different drugs, botox or some new medical experiment. When I healed, I noticed a post in that group "do you think anyone ever heals and just never posts about it here". So I posted in there. Said what I did and steps I took to improve. Got accused of being a scam and removed from the group.

Oh and by the way, this is going on day 11! I was told it would not be long and I could be home last weekend —because normally, patients are home in five days or so. 🤔😕

THIS IS SERIOUS - I AM STILL IN HOSPITAL! — After a highly successful open-heart surgery, I have to say that since Friday I feel like I've had about 3 near death experiences! The worst one was today. Started at 10:35 this morning and I'm right now (3:45pm) just getting kind of back to where I was before this morning. That's due to buildup of liquid that's collecting around my lungs and heart and they have to drain it. But they won't drain it until tomorrow (!!) according to the nurse because the ultrasound people leave at 4 o'clock. My actual heart surgeon left without even checking on me. So much for California healthcare.

@VinoNStrosGal I have some complex medical issues that have only worsened over the years, gaslit by many Drs. Using AI and special groups, I’m closer to finding out what’s wrong after 1 week, than in 30 years. I will only use drs to order labs at this point.

AI, artificial intelligence, is becoming one of the biggest hypes in modern medicine right now. Not in a polished, conference panel kind of way. In a way you can actually feel when you are dressed in a hospital gown, telemetry box in front pocket, waiting hours for specialists to finally walk into your room. It is becoming a provocative word. A thorn in the side of ER physicians. Specialists. RN’s Because it is not staying behind the scenes anymore. Patients are bringing it with them. They are walking into appointments with answers. With questions that are harder to brush off. With something that does not just nod along and send them home. Almost like they have their own advocate sitting right there beside them. And that is new. AI in medicine is far from perfect. Everyone knows that. But it is doing something that is hard to ignore. It is giving people language for what they are feeling. It is helping them connect dots faster. And sometimes it is telling them, this does not sound right, look again. And in at least one case, it helped save a life. A 49 year old man from Norway, a Reddit user named Tykjen, went to the ER with severe abdominal pain. He was told it was acid reflux. Sent home. Still in pain, he turned to AI. It told him to go back. Told him to push for imaging. He did. His appendix was on the verge of rupturing. That decision saved his life. That is not a clean story. That is not a comfortable story. But it is a real one. And it hits something a lot of people recognize. Being dismissed. Being told it is nothing. Going home knowing something is wrong anyway. And now there is something in your pocket that says, look again. And a lot of specialists are not handling that well. Because think about what that means. Years of training. Hundreds of thousands of dollars. An identity built on being the authority in the room. And then a patient walks in with something that can explain a condition you do not immediately recognize. That does not feel collaborative. That feels like a threat. I have seen it myself. I was sitting in front of a neurosurgeon, explaining something that, in my world, is not obscure, Dural Ectasia. She told me she did not know what it was. So I said, do you have a moment? I pulled up ChatGPT. Let it explain. And I watched her face change. Red. Tight. Shaking her head. “Are you going to listen to a neurosurgeon, or are you going to listen to ChatGPT?” That was not curiosity. That was reaction. Because this is not really about AI replacing doctors. It is about what happens when patients are not completely dependent anymore. When authority gets questioned in real time. This is just the beginning. That man did not survive because AI is perfect. He survived because he refused to be dismissed. AI just gave him the language to challenge it. And once that starts happening, authority does not feel the same anymore.

@PragmaticNurse I’ve had similar issues and after 3 years of anguish, I’ve had to accept he’s his own man. He has never once considered I might know something he doesn’t, he’s not gonna start now. I’ve changed gears, treat him with love and spend stress free quality time in his end years instead

My dad has horrible side effects from his statins and refuses to stop taking them because someone with a white lab coat told him if he doesn't take them he'll get a heart attack. I've sent him proof over proof for why they are harmful and he refuses to listen. Not sure how to proceed here.

This is EXACTLY why people are DONE with Facebook Marketplace… 📦 She listed a desk for $40. That’s it. Simple. But what followed? Absolute chaos. Her phone starts blowing up “Is this available?” (still up = yes) “What are the dimensions?” (already in the post) “How much?” (…it literally says $40) Then at 4;30 A.M., someone messages: “I’ll pick it up later today.” So she gets everything ready. Cleans it. Moves it. Waits around all day. And then… nothing. Not a message. Not a heads up. Not even a “sorry.” One day passes… then TWO. Still nothing. Just completely ghosted. That’s the part that drives people insane, it’s not even about selling anymore, it’s about people wasting your time like it means nothing. At this point, “$40” turns into hours of frustration. Be real, what’s worse: the nonstop dumb questions, or the people who swear they’re coming and disappear? And how long would YOU wait before blocking them?

@thedulab Agreed wholeheartedly. On my worst mental health days, I’ll go order a coffee or grab something at the store with the sole intent of smiling and complimenting people. Bonus: it forces me to get out and makes me feel a lil better too.

@ChiefEngineerCE Another component: I was a child in the 80s and watched most moms in the neighborhood choose to go to work so they could buy more stuff and have name brand clothes, swayed by tv and magazines. The workforce ⬆️ like 50% in 10 years, thus mens salaries got diluted.

You know, there was a time in this country when a man could finish high school, get a good job, buy a house, raise a family, and still have his wife stay home with the kids if that’s what they wanted. That wasn’t a fantasy, we aren't getting nostalgic and making our memories better than they were... That was America. We cannot let folks forget that with time things have only gotten better for the foreigners taking our jobs and the people employing them. We were promised that technology and progress would make life easier for the next generation. More time with family. More time in the backyard. More time actually living. Instead, every leap in productivity just meant the folks at the top got richer, while our kids now have to compete with robots that never sleep and foreigners willing to work for pennies while calling us lazy. I want something better for my children. I want my children to grow up in a heartland where a strong back and a good mind can still build a real life. Where the jobs aren’t shipped overseas or handed to machines. Where they don’t have to fight AI and H-1B visas just to put food on the table and a roof over their family’s head. Where our politicians care more for us than their million dollar bank accounts. I want them to inherit the same promise we grew up believing in, that if you work hard in this country, this country will work hard for you. Is that really too much to ask anymore? Tell me I’m not the only father who still wants that American dream for his kids.

@ChiefEngineerCE Was a bartender at one place for 20 years and did GREAT with tips (worked my ass off to build business). Starting pay $6, 20 years later pay was $6. Boss bought 4 rental properties and threw a $250,000 destination wedding for his daughter but pay raises, “he couldn’t afford it”

Notice how businesses keep saying they “can’t find workers” while paying less than ever? One generation ago, one person with a regular job could buy a house, support a family, and still have something left over. Now it takes two adults working multiple gig jobs just to afford rent. The math didn’t change by accident.

All day yesterday they attacked me for my PTSD over and over and over but you see Twitter allows that but if I attack back,they take away eight years of my work and leave a veteran that has PTSD that just quit anxiety medicine completely alone in the dark cut off from my lifeline
