Rwanda NGOs Forum on HIV/AIDS and H.P
Last week, @RwandaNGOForum in collaboration with @RBCRwanda , convened a technical workshop with health facility representatives from @RuhangoDistrict and @BugeseraDistr , alongside experts from @WHORwanda and the Rwanda College of Physicians @Physicians_RW , to develop the Schistosomiasis (SCH) and Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) Surveillance Guideline for IoT districts. This framework strengthens surveillance through early detection, case management, and reporting, which are key to sustaining Rwanda’s progress toward eliminating these NTDs as a public health problem. #BeatNTDs #EndTheNeglect #UnitingToCombatNTDs #RoadToElimination

🌟Know the Law. Own Your Health. Did You Know You Can You Make Your Own Health Decisions?🤔 Understanding your rights is the first step toward protecting your health. Rwanda’s new law regulating healthcare services introduces important changes that directly affect adolescents, especially when it comes to making decisions about their own health. This campaign aims to break down these provisions in a simple and relatable way so that young people are informed, confident, and empowered. One of the key highlights of the law is the age of consent for accessing healthcare services. Adolescents aged 15 and above can now access healthcare services, including sexual and reproductive health services, without needing parental consent. This provision recognizes that young people need timely, confidential, and safe access to healthcare, and it removes barriers that previously prevented many from seeking the services they need. Knowing this right is essential for every young person. It means you have a voice in your health decisions and the ability to seek care without fear or stigma. As we start this campaign, we invite you to learn, and share this information, because when you know the law, you can truly own your health. #KnowTheLawOwnYourHealthRw #HealthyAdolescentsRw

Strengthening cross-border preparedness to boost #HealthSecurity remains work in progress. This week, HDI, in partnership with @IOMRwanda and @RBCRwanda, continued working across Points of Entry to prevent and respond to Mpox and other epidemic-prone diseases. At Cyanika and Gatuna, Community Health Workers (CHWs) and field teams carried out household-level awareness, engaging border communities and key populations with practical information on prevention, early detection, and care-seeking.

Today, @RwandaNGOForum has joined the global community and national stakeholders, including @RwandaHealth/@RBCRwanda, @WHORwanda, @Gasabo_District, Civil Society organizations, Community Health Workers (CHWs) and @CityofKigali residents in marking #WorldTBDay2026 under the theme “TWESE HAMWE TURANDURE IGITUNTU: MENYA IGITUNTU, UCYIRINDE, NURWARA WIVUZE NEZA,” reaffirming our commitment to eliminating tuberculosis (#TB) as a public health threat by 2035. While #TB remains one of the leading infectious disease killers worldwide, #Rwanda has made remarkable progress, reducing #TB incidence from 238 cases per 100,000 people in 2000 to just 62 in 2024, and significantly lowering #TB-related deaths. These achievements reflect sustained national efforts, strong health systems, and community engagement. Through innovative strategies such as community-based case, including reactive case detection, expanded access to rapid diagnostics like GeneXpert, and targeted screening among high-risk populations, #Rwanda continues to strengthen early detection, treatment, and prevention. Importantly, #TB diagnosis and treatment are provided free of charge, ensuring no one is left behind due to financial hardship. However, challenges remain, including stigma and limited #TB awareness, which still hinder timely health-seeking behavior among some communities. To help fight stigma, each of us should play a part by supporting neighbors or friends affected by #TB, speaking out against misinformation, and sharing accurate facts about #TB in our conversations. Simple actions like listening without judgment, encouraging those with symptoms to seek care, and raising awareness on different platforms you use would make a real difference in reducing fear and increasing understanding within our communities. On this #WorldTBDay, every #Rwandan is called upon to play a role in ending #TB by recognizing symptoms early, especially a cough lasting 2 weeks or more, as well as other common #TB symptoms such as persistent fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. By knowing these signs, individuals will seek care promptly and support those affected. Ending #TB is possible, but it requires collective action, continued awareness, collaboration and partnership, and sustained commitment. Together, #Rwanda can achieve a TB-free future. #EndTB2026 #YesWeCanEndTB

2/2 Participants reaffirmed their commitment to advancing #WASH and promoting behavior change, and as a result, report a decrease in risk factors for Neglected Tropical Diseases (#NTDs), especially schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths. These engagements come as the sector‑level community competition evaluation continues. The evaluation recognizes top-performing sectors and encourages improved hygiene and sanitation standards. Sectors are evaluated based on key criteria, including the functionality of hygiene committees, #WASH infrastructure maintenance, community engagement, adherence to ministerial guidelines, and the consistency of data reporting. This transparent process helps partners and stakeholders understand how their support can make a difference. Including these #WASH inspections in district plans will build sustainability and ensure monitoring continues beyond the competition period. #BeatNTDs #EndTheNeglect #UnitingToCombatNTDs #RoadToElimination

1/2 This week, @RwandaNGOForum, in collaboration with @RBCRwanda, supported by @TheENDFund, engaged district authorities, distinguished Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (#WASH) stakeholders, and sector hygiene committees in @RuhangoDistrict and @BugeseraDistr to strengthen hygiene and sanitation practices in communities through regular #WASH inspections and improved accountability at the sector level. These engagements follow a formal process to convene and orient sector hygiene committees on their roles, #WASH inspection guidelines, and key hygiene indicators. Key discussions focused on revitalizing hygiene committees and strengthening routine #WASH monitoring. Discussions also addressed reinforcing accountability and ensuring consistent follow-up across all administrative levels (sector, cell, village, and Isibo). All initiatives align with Ministerial Guidelines of @RwandaHealth. The district and sector teams reached a consensus to conduct quarterly reviews of hygiene committee activities. They committed to implementing a standardized accountability framework for #WASH monitoring. These measures will result in the reactivation of sector hygiene committees and the resumption of regular community monitoring. All stakeholders began providing updates on progress and challenges, ensuring alignment with priorities. #BeatNTDs #EndTheNeglect #UnitingToCombatNTDs #RoadToElimination @nsanzimanasabin @BrianChirombo @JNdayizigiye @YvanButera @CMuvunyi @DrDanielNgamije @WHORwanda @merckgroup @unicefrw @UNDP_Rwanda @WorldBankAfrica @ENDinAfrica @UNITAID @gatesfoundation @USAmbRwanda @FCDOGovUK @GlobalFund @SCIRwanda @RockefellerFdn @ELMAPhilanthro @AmrefAfrica @IntraHealth @MSF_USA @AfricaCDC @SciDevNet @HealthPolicyW @TuyishimeAlbert @TheLancet @ALMA_2030 @NTD_NGOs @AimableDr @UNFPARwanda @semakulam @Imbuto @RwandaLocalGov @RwandaSouth @RwandaEast @WateraidRwanda

Today, Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) hosted the National Stakeholder Symposium on CLEAN-Air (Africa), bringing together diverse partners to discuss household air pollution—one of the most persistent environmental health challenges across #Africa. In his opening remarks, DG @CMuvunyi reaffirmed the Government of Rwanda’s commitment to tackling this challenge through the National Strategy for Transformation, with ambitious targets to reduce reliance on traditional biomass fuels and accelerate the adoption of cleaner, more efficient cooking solutions. He emphasized that this transition is critical for not only environmental sustainability and climate resilience, but also for protecting the health and wellbeing of our population. Currently, over 90% of households in #Rwanda rely on polluting fuels such as firewood and charcoal for cooking (RPHC5, 2022). Through the Energy Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP), the government aims to increase the use of clean fuels—electricity, LPG, and ethanol—from 9% in 2024 to 22% by 2029.

Nothing About Us Without Us: Community Leadership is the Foundation Effective #HIV, #TB, and #Malaria responses depend on #communities owning the #data, #discussion, and #decisions. At the #Rwanda #CSOs and #Communities’ Stakeholder Consultative Workshop on #iCLM Priority Setting, convened by @RwandaNGOForum to shape the NSP 2027–2030 and the @GlobalFund GC8 Funding Request, this principle was evident. We were inspired by @AndrewGasoziNtw, Senior Coordinator at the @UNAIDSRwanda Country Office, whose words capture the essence of the conversation: "Integrated community-led monitoring (#iCLM) for #HIV, #TB, and #Malaria belongs to the #communities. Their ownership and leadership make #iCLM meaningful. We engage #communities! Priorities for #HIV, #TB, and #Malaria NSP 2027-2030 and the GC8 funding request reflect what matters to them." Why is this important? Because programs only work when #communities shape them, monitor them, and speak for themselves. The principle is non-negotiable: Everything for #communities, without #communities, works against them. We must move people from the periphery to the high-level decision-making table. #Communities should participate not as beneficiaries, but as leaders and equal contributors. ✅Ownership: #iCLM isn’t just a data collection tool; it is the #community’s voice. #Community-owned data reflects reality, not assumptions. ✅Leadership: When those at risk, living with, or affected by the diseases, and fighting them daily, set priorities, resources are allocated effectively and equitably. ✅Accountability: We cannot design solutions in a vacuum and expect them to work on the ground. True accountability means #communities drive the response. The upcoming #HIV, #TB, and #Malaria NSP 2027–2030 and the @GlobalFund GC8 funding request must continue to boldly reflect #communities’ priorities. #Community voice must drive better policies, stronger accountability, and responses that save lives. Civil society leaders and #communities will continue to shape these critical documents through consultative and development workshops, sharing #community priorities, and providing feedback on drafts. This active involvement ensures that both #HIV, #TB, and #Malaria NSP2027-2030 and @GlobalFund GC8 funding request are grounded in real experience and drive change where it matters most. Rwanda NGOs Forum on HIV/AIDS and H.P@RwandaNGOForum

From Recipients to Decision‑Makers, Communities Lead Rwanda’s Health Priorities During the #Rwanda CSOs and Communities’ Stakeholder Consultative Workshop on iCLM Priority Setting to inform #HIV, #TB, and #Malaria #NSP 2027–2030 and @GlobalFund GC8 Funding Request, organized by @RwandaNGOForum, we witnessed a shift in how health responses are shaped in #Rwanda. Community voices are not just heard but actively direct the setting of health priorities. Representing @RwandaHealth and @RBC_Rwanda, Dr. Albert Tuyishime (@TuyishimeAlbert), Head of Diseases Prevention and Control Department (HDPC), delivered a people-centred call to action that expands our vision for the future: Communities are no longer just recipients; they are leaders, partners, and decision-makers. Those closest to the challenges are also closest to shaping the solutions too. ✅ When communities lead, responses are more effective and sustainable. ✅ When communities lead, no one is left behind. ✅ When communities lead, we move closer to ending HIV, TB, Malaria, and other public health threats. When we talk about fighting #HIV, #TB, and #malaria, and increasingly, the rising tide of non-communicable diseases (#NCDs), we must acknowledge that data is our compass. However, the most accurate data does not come just from labs and hospitals; it comes from the community at high risk, living with, or affected by diseases and conditions. For too long, the global health architecture has suffered from “vertical syndrome,” building separate data-collection systems and monitoring tools for every disease priority. This is not only inefficient; it is unsustainable. It fragments the service users’ experience and creates a massive burden on those at the front lines. The strategic move to strengthen and upgrade the #iCLM System is a must-do in health system strengthening. By strengthening the #iCLM System to respond to broader health priorities, including #NCDs, we are doing two critical things: 1. We respect the community’s time and save resources: The #iCLM System streamlines data collection, allowing a peer educator or community monitor to collect information for multiple diseases at once, eliminating the need for three separate appointments. This saves the community time, speeds up responses, and conserves resources. 2. We are democratizing data: The #iCLM System captures the realities of the community. It ensures that when the Ministry makes a decision, whether about resource allocation or policy change, it is informed by evidence that reflects the ground truth. This is the essence of building a resilient health system. It’s a recognition that community expertise is just as critical as boardroom expertise, and a commitment to making decisions with communities, not just for them. @RwandaNGOForumcommends this forward-thinking approach from @RBCRwanda and @RwandaHealth. This is how we build a future that is sustainable, equitable, and truly healthy for all. Rwanda’s integrated, community-led model can offer valuable lessons for other countries and organizations aspiring to strengthen their own health systems. This is the future we are building. A future led by community. #LetCommunityLeadRw #PeopleCenteredResponse #HealthIntegration #CommunityData #HealthForAll @nsanzimanasabin @JNdayizigiye @HindHassan_ @CMuvunyi @AndrewGasoziNtw @BrianChirombo @CDCRwanda @ambafrancerwa @expertisefrance @unwomenrwanda @unicefrw @PIH_Rwanda @ITPCglobal @ICAP_ColumbiaU @GFAN_Africa @ahfrwanda @PEPFAR @Avega_Agahozo_ @dreamvillage6 @AmahoroR @Imbuto @ASOFERWA2 @PSF_Rwanda @CaritasRwanda @sfhRwanda @ALMA_2030 @HAImedicines @EUinRW @NLinRwanda @ncdalliance @RwandaNCDA @InterfaithRda @rrpplus @uphls @ASOFERWA2 @ambafrancerwa @PeterASands @DMbituyumuremyi @Knooliet @BernardMuramira @CrescenceMUKAN1

United by Purpose: How Collaboration Drives Meaningful Impact This week, @RwandaNGOForum hosted a Stakeholder Consultative Workshop to inform the #HIV, #TB, and #Malaria NSP 2027-2030 and the GC8 Funding Request. The workshop brought together CSOs, the Private Sector, partners, and communities at high risk, living with, or affected by #HIV, #TB, and #Malaria. Our Chairperson, Bernard Muramira (@BernardMuramira), highlighted the value of community development and diversity as our strength. Civil Society Organizations (#CSOs) and Community-Led Organizations (#CLOs) often work in silos, each with its own mandate and expertise. Yet, as @BernardMuramira emphasized, when we unite for the shared goal of serving communities, our collective power grows. Our diverse group of stakeholders offers a spectrum of knowledge and resources. This diversity is our greatest asset, not a challenge. 1. Diverse expertise: The Private Sector brings innovation and efficiency. CSOs bring deep, grassroots connections and advocacy. NGOs contribute specialized experience in program design and implementation. 2. Diverse reach: By collaborating, we avoid duplication of efforts and ensure critical services reach every corner of the community. Together, we maximize the meaningful impact we aim to achieve. 3. Diverse solutions: Complex community issues rarely have a single, simple fix. By bringing together minds from different backgrounds, we generate more holistic, creative, and sustainable solutions that truly reflect the community's needs. @RwandaNGOForum's commitment to collaboration reflects the belief that no single entity holds all the answers; together, we share the responsibility for greater success. Each stakeholder's unique contribution is vital. United by service, our collaboration drives meaningful, lasting change and improves services for those at risk or affected. #LetCommunityLeadRw #UnitedByPurpose #DiversityIsOurStrength #CommunityImpact #OneHealth @CDCRwanda @ambafrancerwa @expertisefrance @nsanzimanasabin @JNdayizigiye @HindHassan_ @CMuvunyi @TuyishimeAlbert @AndrewGasoziNtw @BrianChirombo @unwomenrwanda @PIH_Rwanda @ICAP_ColumbiaU @ahfrwanda @PEPFAR @Avega_Agahozo_ @dreamvillage6 @AmahoroR @Imbuto @ASOFERWA2 @PSF_Rwanda @CaritasRwanda @sfhRwanda @ALMA_2030 @HAImedicines @EUinRW @NLinRwanda @InterfaithRda @rrpplus @uphls @ASOFERWA2 @ambafrancerwa @PeterASands @DMbituyumuremyi @Knooliet @BernardMuramira @CrescenceMUKAN1

This is an inspiring step forward in protecting 🇷🇼 communities from Malaria. The launch of the Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) campaign highlights the power of partnership and collective action in saving communities lives more especially those living in Malaria high endemic zones! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 @RwandaHealth @nsanzimanasabin @RBCRwanda @CMuvunyi @CityofKigali @Gasabo_District @Sfrwanda1 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and community structures play a critical role in reaching households, raising awareness, strengthening linkages and referrals and ensuring that prevention interventions truly reach the people who need them most. When Govt, Development Partners, Private Sector, CSOs, and communities work hand in hand, we build stronger and more resilient health systems. Sustained collaboration, investment and resources for community-led interventions remain essential to accelerate progress in the Malaria response and safeguard the health of our communities. Together, we can continue turning commitment into real impact on the ground. #InvestInCommunities #CommunitySystemStrengthning #LetCommunitiesLead #Communityempowerment #ZeroMalariaStartsWithMe #SavingLives @AimableDr @Rwanda_CCM @WHORwanda @BrianChirombo @TuyishimeAlbert @sfhRwanda @Imbuto @GFAN_Africa @GlobalFund @HDIRwanda @ImroRwanda @TV1Rwanda @Mamaurwagasabo1 @RwandaNGOForum @CDCRwanda @Gasabo_District @DrDanielNgamije @unicefrw @LiekevandeWiel @JhpiegoRwanda @bkateera @PIH_Rwanda @ambafrancerwa @expertisefrance
