x402 turns the Internet into a payment network. Back in 1997, the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code was introduced to indicate that access to a resource required payment. However, since there were no global payment solutions like PayPal or cryptocurrencies at the time, it was never adopted. Now, the x402 protocol brings this standard to life by defining how to handle payments using crypto and stablecoins within a normal web request. Instead of just saying “Please pay,” the server can now send a clear instruction: “Please pay [AMOUNT] [CURRENCY] [ADDRESS].” This creates a unified standard for interaction between users and applications on the Internet. ps. borrowed text from Patrick Tobler 🤝🏻

x402 memecoin bubble? x402 usage has exploded: up ~175,000% in the past two weeks. Listed API resources are up nearly 20x. x402scan data shows that most of today's volume comes from new memecoin mints. There's a lot of cynicism on the TL, but this moment deserves optimism. Sure, x402 memecoins are technically worse than smart-contract mints. They rely on a trusted server. But they're memecoins, who cares. What matters isn't the memecoins, it's attention. Rapid price movements from private market AI valuations to dot com, bring attention. They bring real users and net-new developers to satisfy the demand. It starts with speculation, then attention, then users, the builders, and finally new infrastructure. I'm reminded of @cdixon's favorite slides of crypto marketcap vs active crypto developers. Through each macro cycle, new developers become interested, invariant of price they build new things and the ecosystem gets new capabilities. This happens in crypto and happened in dotcom. x402 is no different. The tools might look silly today, but they're onboarding a generation of real builders to bring x402 to the promise land.
