Why is #Armenia compelled to purchase weapons to enhance its defence capabilities? From 2021 to 2024, Azerbaijan has carried out over ten military attacks against Armenia, occupying 200 to 300 square kilometres of territory. #Azerbaijan has seized Nagorno-Karabakh, historically populated by Armenians and ostensibly under Russian protection, forcibly displacing 150,000 Armenians. #Armenians have lived in Karabakh for millennia, maintaining their national identity despite being ruled by various empires. It is only under Azerbaijan’s authoritarian rule that #Karabakh has lost its indigenous Armenian population. Even after the forced displacement of Armenians, Azerbaijan continues its anti-Armenian policies. Following the occupation of Karabakh, Azerbaijan’s president introduced the concept of "Western Azerbaijan" referring to the current territory of the Republic of Armenia. By advocating for the "return" of Azerbaijanis to Armenia, #Aliyev is making territorial claims against Armenia, intending to achieve them through war․ Years ago, Aliyev threatened to seize the so-called "Zangezur Corridor" by force if Armenia did not provide it, under Russian supervision. The term "Western Azerbaijan" is a propagandistic narrative used by Aliyev's regime to prolong its rule. The intensification of hostility toward Armenians aims to mobilize Azerbaijanis around the Aliyev dynasty. Aliyev portrays himself as the sole figure capable of protecting Azerbaijan from "revanchist Armenians." For decades, Heydar and Ilham Aliyev justified their dynasty’s rule by "liberating Karabakh from the occupying Armenians." Now that "Karabakh is liberated" the dynasty needs a new ideology to consolidate #Azerbaijanis, and that ideology is the "Western Azerbaijan" narrative. There is no guarantee that Azerbaijan will not wage wars against Armenia in the coming years to "liberate Western Azerbaijan." A regime of constant warfare prolongs the life of the Aliyev dynasty. Armenia is compelled to arm itself to prevent Azerbaijan from starting a war and seizing new territories. Inspired by #Putin's "success" in annexing #Ukrainian territories, Aliyev uses force against Armenia to demand recognition of his conquests. Aliyev has repeatedly stated that international law is in crisis and that the right of force governs the world. If Armenia does not arm itself, Azerbaijan will launch new wars and occupy additional territories. The current Azerbaijani leadership is even capable of committing a new genocide against Armenians in the name of "liberating #WesternAzerbaijan.” Azerbaijan is repeating Armenia's past mistakes. After the victory in the first Karabakh war in 1994, Armenian propaganda convinced the population that Jabrayil, Horadiz, Aghdam, and other territories were historically Armenian and that "land conquered with blood cannot be surrendered." This was the propaganda of Robert Kocharyan's and Serzh Sargsyan's governments. I am not sure that Azerbaijan would not have started a war and occupied Karabakh even after receiving five or seven territories. In reality, the refusal to cede five or seven territories stemmed from the impossibility of securing sufficient international guarantees for Karabakh's safety. Life has shown that Azerbaijan’s government is capable of occupying Karabakh, which was under the control of peacekeepers. Of course, the Russian peacekeepers' goal was never to protect Armenians. However, the fact remains that Azerbaijan stopped at nothing and occupied Karabakh, violating international law and forcibly displacing 150,000 Armenians. For years, Aliyev's propaganda has convinced Azerbaijanis that Armenia is a fake state created by the #Russians, supposedly established on #Azerbaijani land and that Armenians are not indigenous but settlers. This propaganda aims to question Armenia’s right to exist. If a "favourable" international situation arises, there is a risk that the Aliyev dynasty will launch an operation to "liberate Western Azerbaijan." Armenia's arming angers Aliyev because it hinders his plans to execute the "liberation of Western Azerbaijan." He wants Armenia to remain weak, unarmed, and incapable of resistance, so he can easily "liberate Western Azerbaijan." This scenario may sound absurd, but similar scepticism existed about Putin's plans when his propaganda sought to convince Russians that #Ukraine and Ukrainians did not exist. For decades, he laid the groundwork for the current war against Ukraine. Ilham Aliyev follows the same format. His claims that Armenia is arming itself to start a war against Azerbaijan are baseless. No matter how much Armenia arms itself, it cannot restore the military balance with Azerbaijan. Armenia needs a military-political balance, achievable only through close cooperation with the #USA, the #EU, and #France. However, our goal cannot be to ignite new wars. That would be suicidal, given the factors of Turkey and Russia supporting Azerbaijan. We need good and positive relations with Azerbaijan and #Turkey, which will lead to economic development. Armenia must strive for regional peace. For Azerbaijan to be motivated to halt its aggressive policies and pursue peace, Armenia must cease being an "attractive victim" for Azerbaijan. To establish peace, Armenia must be armed, resilient, and a developing state with a pro-Western orientation. I tried to justify why Armenia’s armament is necessary. The alternative is the destruction of Armenia's statehood by the Russian-Azerbaijani tandem.
