@SkyNews All sorts of questions being begged for those of us not in court. A simple one. Why did the Land Rover driver not slow down for a stopped vehicle in the middle lane?

Imagine thinking bicycles are more of a threat to human life than motor vehicles.
Manuel Romana@MRGdeviaje

@Boenau Ask pedestrians, you will have a very different answer. Cyclists cause hundreds of pedestrians injured every year in any major city. This is a clear burden on the people, and thus on the system. By your logic, cyclists must be charged.

Cars are objectively inferior transportation in cities. They get stuck in traffic; hard to find parking. They’re incredibly inefficient for trips <5 miles. Electric cargo bikes can carry groceries or kids. They have rain covers. They’re never in traffic nor need parking spaces.
critical urbanism@criticalurban

Bikes are objectively inferior transportation by every metric. Slow, minimal carrying capacity. Can't carry passengers. Exposed to the elements, the rain, snow, sleet, heat, and cold. It's awful. Incapable of practical regional access.

@AllQuizAble It depends. We already accept limits on choice for the greater good, smoking bans, seatbelts, speed limits. I do believe in choice, but in a city like London, if everyone who could drive did, it would be gridlocked. That’s why we invest in better alternatives.

Took this on my way into work this morning. It’s a clear visual of how much space cars take up vs bikes. 11 people (including me) here using far less space than just three vehicles.

@VitorAlcobia @n00dles71 @CityPolice Cyclists overtaking each other at low speeds is a non-event. It's no more disrespectful than pedestrians "overtaking" each other in a crowded street. Get over it.

This morning was a wake up call at Bank Junction in the City of London for those #cycling who ride through red lights or ride an electric motorbike. Shout out to @CityPolice for organising the bike marking and the truck to highlight how dangerous the blind spots are.

@francesca_kms Calling it reclaiming suggests that modern roads were really built for children to play on, cyclists or people having street parties. They were built for motor vehicles.

We’ve optimised cities for the least space-efficient thing in them. 🚘Cars carry 1–2 people but take huge space 🛣️Most space is for vehicles, not ppl 🚍Traffic slows public transport 🌬️Vehicles produce ~1/2 of London’s nitrogen oxides & reclaiming streets still feels “radical”

@LawrenceLocke6 @francesca_kms Every day thera are such unprofessional analyses of why people drive instead of walking or cycling or using public transport. We do it because overall it's far more efficient for our situation. If it wasn't, we would do something else.

@francesca_kms most journeys are <5 km, distances many could walk, cycle, or take public transport. Yes, but we prefer to drive.

Traffic like👇 Rows of cars, most carrying just 1 person. Around 60% of car trips in London are single occupancy & most journeys are <5 km, distances many could walk, cycle, or take public transport. But yes…cycling’s the problem & public transport is “just not convenient”.

I know it's the Telegraph. But this narrative is widespread. How is lowering the speed limit a war on drivers? We have speed limits, we've agreed as a society that they are necessary. Debating the best limits to balance travel time with the risk to life is perfectly valid.

@redgolf99 @manzanotti I'm no speed control obsessive, but I think that congestion causes the reduction in speed, rather than vice versa.

@manzanotti If you've ever driven on a "smart" motorway you'll know that when speeds are restricted to 50mph, congestion increases and when it goes back to 70 the traffic flows freely. As seen everyday on the M25 and M1.

Why does the UK have such a bad fly-tipping problem? In the Guardian, George Monbiot blames deregulation and not enough spending on enforcement. To me, the cause is obvious. Britain has the highest landfill tax in Europe. The returns to flytipping are just higher here.
