Growing up in Hafez al-Assad's Syria, my mom woke up as a young girl to armed agents in her bedroom searching for banned books. She witnessed a massacre of protesters as the bullets lodged in her shutters. She was denied entry to graduate school because the secret police informed on her. She left it all behind and came to the United States for freedom, to inarguably the greatest place on Earth (Metro-Detroit), and started her family. She was finally able to go to graduate school, start her own small business, and speak freely about politics for the first time in her life. She spoke so freely that Bashar al-Assad put out an arrest warrant against her, thousands of miles away. But the Assads finally fell — and my mom won! Happy Mother's Day!

Russia invaded Ukraine and threatens Europe, Iran sponsors terrorism across the Middle East, and North Korea continues to threaten security in Northeast Asia through its nuclear ambitions. Without China’s economic, diplomatic, and military support, much of which blatantly violates UN Security Council resolutions, none of them could sustain their current level of confrontation with the West. Moreover, China is one of the world’s most serious human rights violators and continues to engage in aggressive espionage, technology and intellectual property theft, and influence operations targeting the United States and its allies. Today is the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism. The day when all of Europe marks the end of the most terrible war of the 20th century. A war after which there should have been only genuine peace. That was the dream back then, when the guns of World War II began to fall silent. That war turned our land into a battlefield of brutal fighting, abuse in occupied territory, and the mass destruction of people and life. The losses of the Ukrainian people were among the greatest in World War II. And the contribution of Ukrainians to the defeat of the Nazis was also among the greatest. Millions of Ukrainians, serving in various armies of the Anti-Hitler Coalition states, fought against Nazism. Millions of Ukrainians were among the victors, having done everything in their power to ensure that absolute evil was defeated. Unfortunately, 81 years later, we are once again forced to stop evil – evil that is just as absolute. Evil that brings nothing but ruins and abuse. And evil based on a similar ideology of enmity. An updated version of Nazism, marked: made in Russia. Today, such Russian aggression can and must be defeated by the united free world. And I am grateful to everyone who helps us defend life. I am grateful to everyone who is not allowing this Russian regime to dictate to the world what comes next. Defending people’s lives and the freedom of nations from Putin is an absolutely dignified way to honor the memory of those who did not allow Hitler to subjugate Europe and the world. Eternal gratitude to all who fought against Nazism and liberated people! Blessed memory to all innocent victims of World War II! Glory to every defender of life! Glory to Ukraine!

There are no words to describe this horror. Just a couple of years ago, I visited Kostiantynivka when it was still a lively frontline city. russian warfare is about erasing what they cannot have. Imagine if this were your city.

Throughout May 5, Russia carried out numerous attacks across Ukraine. As a result of strikes targeting nine regions, at least 27 people have been killed and over 120 injured – all in a single day. Following its usual tactics of terror, many civilian sites have been hit. A day that should have marked the entry into force of a ceasefire proposed by Ukraine is instead ending with a rising toll of victims from intensified Russian attacks. There are no signs that Russia is planning to stop its senseless and brutal war, and no clear response indicating a return to diplomacy for the sake of lasting peace – only more killings. While Russia shows no interest in saving human lives, a collective and firm position is needed from all those who support the protection of life and value peace. Terror must be stopped.
