@MCCCANM @oeingoboeing Turns out he actually made it into the house. Owner held him at bay with a shovel, realized he was dealing with a person having a mental crisis, and talked him down till cops showed up. Can’t say I would have been that accommodating. Stand up guy.

This. I can understand the power of fear, but you cannot allow it to negate your ability to assess a situation when you still have a hard barrier between yourself and a potential threat. Deranged nerd. Flip flops. No visible weapon. Until that door is kicked in, that’s a “check the deadbolt, call 911 to report an attempted home-invasion in progress, retreat away from the door and wait with a loaded gun” situation.
Phil Labonte 🇺🇸@philthatremains

some people are talking like this is a situation in which you would need a gun. it is not. this is a situation in which you call 911 and stay inside. if he breaks in, then you use a gun. NEVER go outside and confront a crazy person.

@62_to_36 @TonyLaneNV @baker_girlie That’s what I was thinking. Hes off his meds, thinks he’s gonna rescue someone’s daughter and probably thinks the bathrobe is a duster. I’d keep the gun on the door in case he maybe makes it in with the cops on the phone. Dude needs help more than he needs shot.

THIS IS A HOMEOWNER’S WORST NIGHTMARE Ring camera catches a man showing up uninvited… pounding, demanding answers… asking about someone’s daughter 😳 Then it escalates - threats if the door doesn’t open. Broad daylight. No fear. No hesitation. This isn’t just “weird behavior”… this is exactly why people don’t take chances anymore. You’re inside your home… and THIS shows up at your door. What are you doing in that moment? ⬇️ 🇺🇸

@Asst_to_the_RM I think there might be some value in mandatory reserve duty…..not active duty. Lots of nations have such systems. Law would be no getting out of it (unless for legit medical reasons determined by military doctors) so all socioeconomic groups would participate.

A new winner for the craziest folks here: Central Coast NIMBYs, who top "folks on Bluesky on AI" and "2020 political fights". Check out the comments! So here's S. France, to scale, minus Marseille: 4x the pop density, perfectly lovely. Not skyscrapers, gang - just what could be.

Urbanism Twitter is talking about SLO right now. In my view, the most wasted land in America. The two counties have perfect weather, beautiful coastal scenery...and the population density of Belarus or Missouri, growing 1/3 slower than US as a whole since 2000. Madness. 1/2

@SCHMVLL @Illumimatti @Afinetheorem There are three sizable airports in all three cities. Two with lots of regular commercial service with runways long enough to support large commercial jets. I don’t understand why so many people keep saying that.

@Illumimatti @Afinetheorem SLO County airport has a longer runway than John Wayne in Orange County. There’s no physical reason they couldn’t have commercial flights. They could also be a train ride away from San Jose or Santa Barbara.

@Ron4California I found that conversation humorous. It boiled down to “they should just build a city and a big airport”. When I ask who “they” is, no answer. I pointed out there are three cities and big airports there already so how come it isn’t urban already? No answer. Dumb.

The thing about all these posts that makes everyone cringe is we all know the results. Ugly behemoth stack and packs, vagrant feces all over the place, infinite break-ins. So yeah, take your designer urban blight and shove it up your arze.

@Unit025 Person who’s been in and around the military for 30 years now. The “middle class” is a big group and you’re correct. BUT, I say a sizable majority come from the lower rungs of that group. Upper and upper middle clans kids have more options. The lower income kids fight our wars.

Statistically untrue. The military is largely from middle class backgrounds, and most people I've ever met in my Active time joined for the opportunity to see and live shit you won't see in any other job field aside from working for very specific US agencies.

Hi. Meteorologist here. Clouds are made up of condensed liquid or frozen water droplets / ice crystals. They therefore require a moisture source, such as the ocean or in this case, the Gulf of Mexico. This cloud mass formed along a stalled cold front. Water evaporated into the air was advected (horizontally transported) north along it, condensing along the way, forming the cloud. Basic meteorology. No conspiracy.
UFO mania@maniaUFO

Why does all this cloud seem to be originating from one random location in the Gulf?🧐🤔

Space folk - I know there are traditions like wearing green (or at least not red!) on launch days, and JPL has peanuts for rover landings, but what are the traditions for human landings? Anything special in MCC? @therealdjflux @mgrabois do you know?

@Afinetheorem @oliverc85 So who would build it and why. Sorta like a field of dreams thing? If you build it they will come. There are cities there already…..just not big ones. I live here. What do we build first?

@oliverc85 @Afinetheorem I-40 dead-ends near Barstow. If you extended it basically due west, It would end in Santa Barbara. In addition to making it much easier for residents to travel inland, trucks going to or from the Central Coast would no longer have to go up to the Bay Area or down to the L.A. area

@oliverc85 @Afinetheorem All that’s needed is a small regional airport that can get people to LAX, SFO, LAS, PHX. Regional jets would be enough.

@JJFilson @Afinetheorem Spot on. The only growing commercial sectors here are associated with the Base. Other than that this place is ranching, agriculture and tourism. Pretty, but too far off main transportation hubs to be much more than that. 20+ year resident.

@Afinetheorem If you bothered to read my reply to the original Jacob Shell post, you might understand: x.com/JJFilson/statu… Quite simply, if a place doesn't have the right bones to produce a robust array of jobs, productive, it can't grow. The primary bones: an axis of trade & commerce.
John J Filson@JJFilson

@JacobAShell If you consider the very reason a city originates, it should be obvious. Most world cities begin as favorable places of commerce & trade, most often on a river, a sea port, sometimes an interior crossroads. In the US, railroads are a big factor, lately interstate highways also.

@Maxime44 @Afinetheorem Already has an 8000 ft runway. Can accommodate large jets easily. The base or the existing airport isn’t the problem. California taxes and the bussiness climate are.

Question: wouldn’t the space base be an issue to have a bigger airport there? Otherwise, yeah classic California mindset: we don’t want more people, let us keep our nature. A big part of me thinks California needs a massive housing market collapse. Too many people got addicted to what their houses are worth, plus benefit from prop 13 with taxing base. This is a massive hinder to positive changes, plus really slows down the turnover in the housing market. A crash would motivate people to move, sell their homes.

@donkeyDdevelops @Afinetheorem Santa Maria already has an airport that can accommodate large jets (DC10’s fly out of the fire tanker base there routinely) and can’t keep scheduled air traffic for more than a few months at a time before the airline pulls out due to lack of revenue.

@Afinetheorem The complaint for years was that there weren't enough high paying jobs to create enough the economic horsepower you'd need to build up that area. That's changed now. If you plopped down a major airport outside Santa Maria the whole place would explode.
