WWI French "Sauterelle" Grenade Launcher / L’Arbalete la Sauterelle Type A D’Imphy | Sold Through Auction ~ Realized $16,535 Exceedingly scarce WWI French "Sauterelle" Grenade Launcher / L’Arbalete la Sauterelle Type A D’Imphy. Shipped back from France by a US service member serving in WWI. The service member's name, city, and state are written in paint on the bottom of the launcher. The name is not legible enough to make out clearly. City and State are written as "New Haven, Conn". (Please see the last images attached to the auction listing). Provenance: Discovered for sale at a flea market in Connecticut, USA by a friend of the consignor. Iron and wood construction. Steel bars and grenade cup have been rebuilt (by the consignor). Firing data plates on the left and right of the forward section. Serial number near crank mechanism. Includes inert models of Type 14 grenades (inert grenades constructed by the consignor for display purpose). The French Sauterelle d’Imphy is a grenade-launcher in the form of a large crossbow. It was designed in 1915 for the purpose of lofting hand grenades (or bomb-type projectiles) from trench positions, using mechanical energy rather than a conventional gun or mortar propellant. Due to short service life, and subsequent low manufacturing, very few are known to exist today. The only other example of this launcher that we were able to locate is on display in the Paris Musée de l’Armée. Captured and brought back by the consignor, a retired US Army First Sergeant. Includes signed & notarized statement of fact from the consignor (veteran who captured & brought it back). As stated by the consignor: "I recovered this flag at a school that we were clearing of explosives in Mosul. This was in 2017, I was with the second brigade combat team 82nd Airborne Division in the 37th Engineer Battalion, Bravo Company to be exact. It was in a Ziploc bag with dirt and debris on it. Born February 26, 1896, in Sidney, New York, Evans F. Carlson left high school at the age of 16 to join the US Army. He served in the Philippines and Hawaii from 1912 to 1916. After Carlson reenlisted, he participated in the 1917 Pancho Villa Expedition, and later earned a Purple Heart for his service in France during World War I. Carlson rose to the rank of Captain in the Field Artillery during postwar occupation in Germany and was discharged in 1921. In 1922, Carlson enlisted in the Marine Corps as a Private and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant the following year. His early assignments included training at the Pensacola Naval Aeronautical Station, foreign service in Shanghai (1927–1929), and Guatemala (1930–1933), where he earned the Navy Cross for defending his garrison against overwhelming odds. Upon his return to the US, Carlson served as Executive Officer of the Marine Detachment assigned to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Warm Springs, Georgia, and formed close ties with the President and his son James. From 1934 to 1938, he served two tours in China. Carlson observed the Chinese Red Army during the Long March, and studied both Japanese and Chinese guerrilla tactics, insights that later shaped his own military innovations. After he resigned his commission in 1939 to lecture and write about Japanese aggression, Carlson rejoined the Marines in 1941 as a Major. Because of his experiences in China, he was placed in command of the newly founded 2nd Marine Raider Battalion in 1942. He went on to restructure the traditional Marine squads from eight into ten-man units, composed of three “fireteams,” - a model still used by modern special forces. His progressive leadership philosophy emphasized that officers should serve their enlisted men, an idea advanced with support from President Roosevelt and Captain James Roosevelt. As commander of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, known as “Carlson’s Raiders”, he led the 1942 Makin Raid, earned his 2nd Navy Cross, and a 3rd for heroism at Guadalcanal. After he was wounded at Saipan while rescuing a radio operator, Carlson received a 2nd Purple Heart, and retired in 1946 as a Brigadier General. Brigadier General Evans Fordyce Carlson died May 27, 1947, in Portland, Oregon, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Carlson passed away in 2005, the estate remained intact and mostly untouched until the estate sale in 2024.
