It is with a very heavy heart that I have offered my resignation to the Prime Minister.

BREAKING: Emerging from the crucial cabinet meeting in Downing Street this morning, top Starmer ally Steve Reed tells political editor @BethRigby: "The prime minister has my full support." Politics latest: trib.al/WLFmeZb 📺 Sky 501 and YouTube

Last week’s local election results were among the worst in our history. Keir Starmer must end this chaos and now set out a timetable for a reasonable and orderly transition to a new leader. Labour must offer hope, rebuild trust, and transform people’s lives.

UK PM Keir Starmer tells cabinet he will "get on with governing" and leadership challenge has not been triggered bbc.in/4fdZ8oC

Starmer and Reeves are not kidding when they say this political uncertainty causes economic damage. The only “reset” being achieved at the moment is higher borrowing costs. Result? We’re all worse off. So deeply depressing.

BREAKING The Prime Minister told a meeting of the Cabinet: “As I said yesterday, I take responsibility for these election results and I take responsibility for delivering the change we promised. “The past 48 hours have been destabilising for government and that has a real economic cost for our country and for families. “The Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader and that has not been triggered. “The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a Cabinet.” Ends
