the best people i know have one thing in common: they don’t go to these events. here’s how i met them. 1) i was chronically online while building shit at college. i dm’d brilliant guy working on a product i used. he responded. 2) got internship with guy and turned it into a full time job. grinded my ass off in Lake Tahoe for a year. no one knew me. 3) applied to thrive on a whim. told my story about startups and tahoe. 4) managed to be accepted to thrive fellowship. they gave me full time offer 5) thrive and nyc friends introduced me to tons of incredible people. these people introduced me to others and now things have snowballed i grew up in cleveland, went to boston college, and then lived in lake tahoe, nevada. none of those places have real tech scenes. follow your own path, do right by others, relentlessly chase after your passions, and when opportunities present themselves — deliver.

networking as activity is mostly cope. e.g. the conference circuit, the warm intros, the moving to sf discussions or whatever, oh & the “grabbing coffee” economy.. all of this is overwhelmingly negative selection esp with vc (lol). the ppl worth knowing are usually too busy doing the thing to be farmable, & the ppl available to be networked w/ are available cuz they have literally nothing better going on. do the work, then publish it loudly enough that the right ppl can find you w/o you having to chase. one way broadcast > two way schmoozing. this is why x matters a ton now more than ever before.

You have no experience. You’ve never started a company. You’ve never had a full time job. Nike is going to kill you. You’re a kid. You don’t have technical skills. You shouldn’t build hardware. Apple is going to kill you. You can’t build hardware. You can’t measure heart rate non-invasively. Athletes don’t care about recovery. Under Armour is going to kill you. It won’t be accurate. You don’t listen. You’re an ineffective leader. You can’t recruit great talent. You’re going to have to pay every athlete. You can’t measure sleep non-invasively. It’s too expensive to research. Athletes are a small market. The product costs too much to make. The product costs too much to sell. Your valuation is too high. Consumers aren’t going to want it. Hardware is too hard. You should measure steps. Fitbit is going to kill you. You can’t build a marketing engine. You can’t raise enough money. You need a real CEO. Google is going to kill you. You can’t be a subscription. You can’t build a brand. You can’t do consumer in Boston. Your valuation is too high. You shouldn’t make accessories. You shouldn’t make apparel. Lululemon is going to kill you. You can’t predict Covid. Stay in your niche. You are going to run out of money. You can’t build a health platform. Amazon is going to kill you. You can’t measure blood pressure. You can’t get medical approvals. The market is too small. You don’t understand AI. The market is too competitive. It won’t work internationally. The supply chain is too complicated. You can’t build an AI. You can’t raise enough money. It’s too competitive. Healthcare isn’t going to want it. … Just keep going ✌️

After 15 wonderful years @generalcatalyst I am moving on to new adventures. The best days for GC are ahead! Super grateful to every single one of my teammates that I had the fortune to work with over the years. I learned a lot. Very thankful to our limited partners too for their long-term support. Equally importantly, it's been the privilege of a lifetime to work with so many inspiring tech startup founders from the very early days.

the “modern deal guy” in the flesh: deal specific capital, divine mandate, no burn, just a dream and some sovereigns congratulations matt
Will Manidis tweet media
Will Manidis@WillManidis

the modern deal guy has no permanent capital, no permanent loyalty, and no permanent location. the modern deal guy is playing a repeated game, he doesn't care who he pisses off, there's going to be another hand. the modern deal guy is much more a broker than a principal. he has an ecosystem around him that identify as "his guys" the modern deal guy has 99% of his chips on the table at any given moment, the next hand will always be bigger. the modern deal guy is reticent to monetize any given opportunity early, but when he decides its time to sell, he does so savagely and without concern for fallout. the modern deal guy is only concerned about where he spends his time. he runs a schedule like a CAA agent the modern deal guy is only constrained by sourcing talent to put behind ideas at scale, capital and opportunity sets are infinite the modern deal guy either has an exhaustively curated public persona, or none at all, anything in the middle is a mess. the modern deal guy has very little concern for whats "on the paper", he's playing a very different game of pressure and repetition the modern deal guy is unusually concerned about studying history and learning from adjacencies. the modern deal guy has a personal burn that would make your nose bleed. all in service of maximum optionality the modern deal guy can be better thought of as a "franchise" rather than a firm. the modern deal guy will generate dozens of lesser deal guys that will repeat the playbook in his stead.

@dieworkwear The glossy dial one is earlier production and costs $10-20k more than the matte dial version. Don’t overthink it. Cost difference is mainly because fewer glossy dials in good condition are available. Everything else is materially the same
