@TheArkeTraveler @brandenflasch Yeah that's exactly what the heat pipe is! Why I was disappointed, I've had better thermal performance from the non-cooled Alpi cables which also do 500A. Maybe the heat pipe cable doesn't do well in direct sun? It's super cool tech, though.

@EVZacOfAll @brandenflasch I don’t know what a “heat pipe” is, but I do know this is using their new two-phase cooling loop in the handle. I could feel the heat being expelled from it. I hope to have more on this in June!

@brandenflasch @TheArkeTraveler Later model Mach E, can see port DC pin temps in car scanner. Typically derates when they're above ~80C which is fairly common for long charges on V3 SuC but uncommon in cooled CCS cables. Maybe I got a bad one but got there in about 10 min at the brand new CO Walmart location.

@brandenflasch @TheArkeTraveler I like the graphics but was quite disappointed by the CCS temperature performance, they made a big deal about the heat pipe but got hot quick in 85F ambient

@SantoroSystems @brandenflasch Legacy OEM marketing is stuck in 2019 when EA was the only open high power network in the US. Engineering probably said "charges in 18 min if you use a 350kW charger" and marketing simplified it to "Charges at 350kW chargers!" Because that sounded better than charges at 240kW.

@brandenflasch I'm out of the loop, is it's charging anything around 350? Or is it just because it's compatible with 350 KW Chargers?

@LangReynolds Who is the EVSE manufacture for that hardware? Was just admiring the new 400kW site in Gaylord, MI, not familiar with it! Awesome to have another fast choice besides the EA site in that town!

@brandenflasch Current US gasoline prices do not correctly factor in the necessary externalities of a burned fuel. An overnight change would be disastrous, but the only long-term solution to force us to solve this problem is higher pricing since we cannot rely on the government to solve.

This is a great update from Ford for the F150 Lightning! Gathered some data and made visuals - I bought my 2022 ER in Mar 2025 and it had the 500A CSP done when I got it, so I don't have any data for the 450A charging behavior. In short, prior to this update (can't prove it was this update, but if this enabled 500A for vehicles without it, seems the most likely update to be the trigger), Lightning would derate DCFC when DC pin temps reach ~61C and if the temps don't start to steady state or reduce, it will continue to derate until reaching a floor of about 90kW (after initial boost that is also shortened by pin temps). With this update, Lightning now allows a more aggressive curve (full boost) up to about 81C DC pin temps before going to ~125kW steady state. TL;DR: This should result in much better charging in high ambient temps (80F+), with an adapter (Superchargers) and/or with passively cooled DCFC cables (not all DCFC cables are actively cooled - even at higher power). This should make summer road trips a better experience.

Woah, @Ford seems to have quietly improved the Lightning charge curve by allowing higher pin temps (they were derating super early prior)! I need to do a proper 10-80% now.

@brandenflasch Glad they got it at least figured out for now. I stopped at the CO MB location on Wednesday and was not yet in free vend but the ChargePoint backend seemed to be having problems. Alpis were green but waiting for payment when plugged in and both card and app authentication failed

@TheArkeTraveler Not sure if you track status of permits for all the locations in permitting, but the permits for Loveland, CO just got issued on 1/28, so hopefully on to construction shortly!

"Absolutely inexcusable why Colorado would approve (Scout selling direct to consumer). The franchise model provides the most value for the consumer. So why a manufacturer would wanna pursue it in the first place just doesn’t make sense to me." Scout’s approval to sell direct in Colorado is raising new questions for franchise dealers. Josh Johnson, CEO of Don Johnson Auto Group, breaks down what this means for dealer-OEM relationships. @adambecker1 @itskyleconner @Tesla CARB ACCII regulation 1962.5 requires that OEMs display State of Health of the battery, charge rate in kW, max rate of charge the vehicle can accept on the vehicle displays. So far VAG, Kia/Hyundai, GM, and now Tesla have vehicles in production that comply.

Cool feature in recent Tesla software tells you the maximum charge rate the battery can take vs what you’re getting from the charger Worry no more about guessing if it’s the car or charger limiting your charging session! Nice work @Tesla

@minusYCore @cybrtrkguy Tesla has never opened up any site to NACS partners that has both V2 and V3/V4 posts co-located because of the potential (likely) confusion of some but not all of the stalls at that location working for non-Tesla vehicles. They *could* work, but Tesla doesn't allow it.

@EVZacOfAll @cybrtrkguy I don't follow Non Teslas can charge at V3 and V4, (word is stock of V3 posts has dried up), V2/1 lack compatibility So any newer gen addition should be cross platform

@minusYCore @cybrtrkguy Unfortunately if it's a V2+V3.5/4 site it'll be Tesla only still which won't help all the new NACS non-Tesla vehicles coming, but will at least help with speeds on I75!
