The Post Office scandal victim Parmod Kalia was wrongly convicted, sent to prison, had his conviction overturned in 2021, and still died waiting for full compensation. That should shame everyone involved.

I used to be such a huge fan of @JamesTCobbler, and was loving his appointment as Minister of Prisons in 2024 by @Keir_Starmer; but it's shocking to see him become so spineless, and morally bankrupt, after such a short tenure in politics. For the record – I am a huge prison reformist, and truly believe most of the people in prison have been failed, shouldn't be there, and are only being further harmed in being locked up in a broken carceral system. But how James can centre these long overdue prison reforms entirely on women, when they comprise just 4% of the prison population, is utterly shameful, devoid of common sense, compassion, human decency, and couldn't be a clearer example of "two tier" justice. Why is he doing this? But 29% of male prisoners report the same, showing abuse is a substantial issue for both sexes. However a similar percentage of male prisoners are fathers too; the Government estimates 53% of male prisoners are fathers of dependent children, compared to 55% of female prisoners who are mothers. Source: gov.uk/government/sta… Head Injuries James argues many women in prison have serious brain injuries, and yes, again, they do. 65% of female prisoners have a traumatic brain injury, with slightly lower rates of 51-60% for male prisoners. Source/s committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidenc… theguardian.com/society/2019/f… I could go on, but the point is clear – This is not effective policy at all; it's gutless, ideological, political pandering, that will leave countless thousands of imprisoned men behind, and failed as part of a two-tier justice system. Not only is this policy immoral, it is illegal. The Equality Act of 2010 only allows such discriminatory policy if it is a ‘proportionate’ means of achieving a ‘legitimate aim’. And it is neither of these things. Consider also the stats I gave are percentages, and whilst they are already similar in such relative terms; when you scale for the fact that the male prison population is 25X larger than the female prison population, it means, in absolute terms, each of these issues in male prisons utterly dwarf how prevalent they are in female prisons – which James ignores entirely. My point is simple – Vulnerable prisoners should be helped on the basis of need, not gender. Shame on you James. Your cowardice will cost men their lives.

River guardians do not want bribes that allow Thames Water to keep breaking the law. We want one simple thing: for Thames Water to put spades in the ground & fix every single illegal outfall within the next 5-10 years. A little story to illustrate: 5 years ago I found an illegal outfall spewing raw sewage (with visible turds) into the Aldersbrook (a tributary of the Roding). The EA refused to prosecute, but I created so much fuss locally about it that eventually I got a visit from Richard Aylard, Thames Water’s ‘Sustainability Director’ who had an unflattering appearance in the recent ‘Dirty Business’ programme. Instead of setting forth a timetable to fix the outfall, Aylard offered the River Roding Trust (the entirely volunteer run charity I founded) £50,000 for “river restoration”. I refused this offer, saying there was no point restoring a brook that still had raw shit going into it. I continued campaigning for another three years: taking numerous journalists to the outfall, getting Thames Water hauled before the local council scrutiny committee & relentlessly calling them out on social media. Eventually, after 4 years, Thames spent £1 million fixing the outfall & the brook is now clean for the first time in decades. I have no doubt that if I hadn’t discovered the outfall in the first place, or if I had taken the £50,000, the outfall would still be putting raw turds into the Aldersbrook, a stone’s throw from Ilford town centre. It’s obvious for Thames that’s it cheaper to pay their critics to keep quiet than to do the work needed to fix the problem, but this is not what our rivers need.

Stacey Sharples’s false allegations of rape destroyed lives. Ten innocent men were arrested, jailed in custody & branded rapists. Had she succeeded, they would have gone to prison for years. Sharples has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years. But if her lies had secured convictions, the men she accused would have faced sentences many times longer. Justice would have meant parity: a false accuser should face the same punishment their victims would have received had the lie prevailed. For years we have been told false allegations are vanishingly rare — a narrative repeated endlessly after the disastrous Operation Midland investigation. Former Norfolk Chief Constable Simon Bailey claimed they amounted to just 0.1%. That figure has always been implausible. Sir Richard Henriques, who investigated the scandal, placed the figure far higher — closer to 10%, and even that may be conservative. When lives can be destroyed on the basis of untested claims, the stakes could not be higher. The police must investigate allegations thoroughly — but they must also recognise that malicious false accusers exist. Until the system accepts that reality, innocent people will remain at risk. @FACTukorg
