Today raised grave concern in Parliament over the alarming rise of cancer cases in Punjab, now severely impacting Amritsar and the Majha region. The Tung Dhab drain has become a major pollution source, alongside poor sewage management, excessive pesticide use, and contaminated groundwater. Cancer treatment is costly and devastating for families. I urge @MoHFW_INDIA @PMOIndia @PunjabGovtIndia to ensure clean drinking water, control pollution, and expand affordable cancer care. For many years now, the FlyAmritsar Initiative along with many others has been consistently advocating and lobbying for stronger international connectivity to Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar @aaiasrairport — including better aircraft deployment and improved service standards on existing routes. The demand you mention is absolutely real. The Punjabi diaspora in the UK has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to flying directly to Amritsar — even when fares are higher — simply to reach home without the additional long road journeys from Delhi. However, this loyalty should not be taken for granted. @airindia currently operates the @bhx_official Birmingham–Amritsar service and also runs 3x weekly Delhi–Amritsar flights, which in reality carry a significant number of Punjab-bound passengers. If Air India aircraft availability is limited, prioritizing newer aircraft and better onboard product on Amritsar routes would be a reasonable and justified step. Passengers paying premium fares deserve reliable IFE, consistent service quality, modern aircraft and punctual operations. The Punjabi diaspora’s dedication to Amritsar is unmatched — and routes serving this market deserve to reflect that demand. With 2–3 flights arriving simultaneously, only ONE scanner was operational. I shared photos then of elderly and handicapped passengers trapped in long queues in a tweet to then @MoCA_GoI Minister @JM_Scindia. Our intervention led to coverage by media including The Tribune @thetribunechd, Dainik Bhaskar @DainikBhaskar The History of Inaction: • The 2022 Promise: Following this, Former Airport Director Mr. V.K. Seth and Customs officials met with us (#FlyAmritsar Initiative & @avm_ngo) and personally assured us that a second scanner would be functional to keep wait times under 30 minutes. We thank them for considering our request. • The "UAE" Excuse: Authorities claimed 100% scanning was reserved for "sensitive" Dubai/Sharjah flights. We questioned why Amritsar is targeted when Delhi handles 10x the UAE traffic with random checks, but we respected the security mandate—provided the infrastructure matched the policy. • March 2025: I personally experienced the exact same bottleneck arriving from Sharjah. One scanner for 180+ passengers. • March 2026: Now, passengers from Kuala Lumpur—not even a "UAE flight"—are reporting the same struggle. It is time to stop the excuses.
