Curious timing of this @FBI announcement about alleged Islamic regime plots targeting civil society activists in the US and Canada, yet they have done nothing to track down the kidnappers and killers of many Americans. Some of us wonder when or if the @FBI will ever roll out a case against the perpetrators who were involved in a transnational kidnapping and execution of a US national, Jimmy Sharmahd. The US Commission on International Religious Freedom has recommended economic sanctions on the Office of Religious Affairs for several years. It is time to make it so - Cuba's Office of Religious Affairs is the Communist Party's Religion Police. There is no religious liberty in Cuba. Among other things, they want to destroy the Catholic Church - their primary persecution target. The Islamic Regime started to assassinate political prisoners, dissidents, including one US national, starting on or about October 28, 2024. The Islamic Regime of Iran is not going to stop unless concrete steps are taken by the US and other nations in a position to help. America and Sweden can and must do more to rescue their nationals and other hostages. @bergersus @Edelstam

Sweden did not aggressively push Iran to free its dual nationals but instead focused on obtaining guarantees from the Iranian regime that it would not carry out the death penalty. It’s time for an official, objective review what factors guided this strategy.

N.B., on a somewhat related note, there are US nationals wrongfully detained (held hostage) who have legal rights under the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-Taking Accountability Act who have been left behind. These cases should've been with @StateSPEHA long ago, not Consular @TravelGov. Now that America is essentially at war with the #Islamic Regime of #Iran, the clip of saving these US nationals needs to shift fast. One US national was executed in October 2024; more will die unless these cases are prioritized. @HouseForeignGOP @HouseForeign @HouseJudiciary @JudiciaryGOP @SenateForeign @SenateJudiciary

American diplomats in #Cuba should be tasked first and foremost with putting America and American interests first. Meeting with religious leaders and dissidents in this public and antagonizing way should come second, if at all. For example, there are Americans wrongfully detained in Cuba. How does doing this help bring Americans home? American diplomats in Cuba are doing great work, and Cuba is a tough duty station, even dangerous (think Havana syndrome). But this has been done before, and, frankly, it has not worked (and Cuba has arrested dissidents for these meetings or expelled them from Cuba). Focusing on Americans and American issues (detained Americans, property claims, Cuba relations with Iran/Russia/China) is a better way forward.

US government officials in #Cuba should be allowed by Cuba @CubaMINREX to visit with Americans wrongfully detained in #Cuba. There are many, including one case from Florida. @MikeHammerUSA should be tasked by the Trump Administration, first and foremost, with finding a way to bring Americans home. Antagonizing the Cuban government with these social media posts will not bring liberty to Cuba, and it is endangering Cuban civil society leaders, including religious leaders and influencers in Cuba who have contacted me asking for help. US taxpayer-funded projects in Cuba are hurting the securing of the release of Americans wrongfully detained in Cuba. The Cuban medical missions program, which I’ve worked to expose, is important yet also a legacy USAID program that appears to remain funded by the USG. The Murillo-Ortega dictatorship continues to hold elderly and ailing individuals like Brooklyn Rivera. These individuals were imprisoned for nothing more than disagreeing with the regime and they remain unjustly detained in inhumane conditions, denied basic rights, and medical care. 🧵 There's a lot of tough talk on Cuba these days. Good. Enforce the law. But let's be frank and honest with ourselves, too. According to U.S. government data, exports to Cuba of food, medicine, and other goods such as luxury cars have been getting through. Republicans and Democrats spanning several Congresses and Administrations have allowed the trade to grow with Cuba, thereby weakening the US law's primary goals, a peaceful transition to democracy in Cuba.
