Alan Ng, a very authentic and fair film critic with bonafide credentials said he was "bored out of his mind" when coming out of the Odyssey. He also mentioned the sound mix was terrible and he checked out almost immediately. I BELIEVE HIM.

So The Odyssey hype crashes into reality. The Hollywood Reporter has been coy about making box office predictions until now, preferring to shower it with cinematic praise and show pretty pictures of the cast, but it finally was forced today to give up some actual numbers, and they aren't very good. All the astroturfers have been claiming it isn't woke, and if it is you shouldn't care, and you have to see the film anyway, and if you don't it doesn't matter because the advance ticket sales are amazing. They aren't. HR is estimating advance ticket sales of $30M-$40M (I'm guessing probably closer to the low end). How does that compare to other big budget films? Wicked: For Good was over $60M, Deadpool & Wolverine was $50M. So The Odyssey's advance sales are not going to save it. Also predicting $85 million-$100 million opening weekend. This number isn't random. HR is predicting 150M-180M for the next Spiderman, and that's probably some hype too. But they can't predict huge numbers for The Odyssey, or it will be really obvious when it finally comes out that it massively underperformed. So they tease maybe $100 million, because anything less would sound like a disappointment. But they sneak in a low number to prepare for the likely coming disaster. At 85M, it would be substantially less than the opening of Oppenheimer at $98.7M. That isn't good for a film with a much bigger budget and an array of big stars that were supposed to make it a must see. To save face they're saying it might have a 200M global opening, slightly better than Oppenheimer's $181. If any of this is true, it doesn't indicate The Odyssey is anything other than a woke over budgeted disappointment. And there's a good chance it will end up being much worse. Particularly if there is a big second weekend drop off. Which gets me back to thinking Nolan and the studio have known for some time this isn't a very good film. He took chances with the casting, the casual language, and hauling around crazy expensive Imax cameras that just make the film look flat. The insane astroturfing calling anyone racist who could smell the pretentiousness, is a ploy to blame racism and right wingers for the film's failure, hoping that will salvage some Oscar noms. And might finally give Nolan his coveted writing Oscar as a protest vote.
