♾ Finally The Day We've All Been Waiting For Has Arrived! ♾ DeCo (The Decentralized Coding Workshop) will live today on 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM EDT at MIT, bringing together some of the brightest minds in network coding and decentralized systems. At its core, DeCo is about advancing technologies like network coding, erasure coding, and distributed systems, with a strong focus on innovations such as Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC). A breakthrough approach that can significantly improve data propagation, reduce latency, and enhance overall network efficiency.

Traditional Gossip vs Smarter Data Propagation. From what I’ve explored this week, traditional gossip protocols do a good job at spreading data, but they aren’t efficient at scale. The whole model relies on repeated forwarding between peers, @get_optimum

NETWORK CODING BASICS. Today I studied how network coding (RLNC) is used in Optimum to improve data propagation over traditional gossip. • Packet Mixing (Encoding) Instead of forwarding raw packets, nodes mix data into coded packets using linear combinations. @get_optimum

Key differences: OptimumP2P vs. Floodsub vs. Gossipsub: Floodsub: the old-school brute force one It just floods every message to all connected peers who care about the topic. Super simple, super fast delivery in small networks, but it explodes in bandwidth use as the network grows. Like yelling in a crowded room - hears, but it's noisy and wasteful. Gossipsub: the smart upgrade everyone actually uses now Replaced Floodsub because it's way more efficient. Peers form a sparse mesh (limited connections, like ~6-12 per node), send full messages only to mesh neighbors, and use lightweight "gossip" (IHAVE/IWANT) to ask for missing stuff from random other peers. Result: Much lower bandwidth, still fast propagation, scales to thousands of nodes. (It's the default in modern libp2p.) OptimumP2P: the new hotness (2025 research / emerging) Built on top of libp2p ideas but adds Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) - basically smart error-correcting coding so you send coded chunks instead of full redundant copies. Key wins over Gossipsub : 1: Lower latency (especially at high message rates or big payloads). 2: Better bandwidth efficiency (less redundancy waste) More reliable under congestion or churn. 3: Handles bursty traffic without choking as badly. @get_optimum

In short: 1: Floodsub = "everyone gets everything" → simple but bandwidth hog 2: Gossipsub = "smart gossip with controlled meshes" - balanced & production-ready today 3: OptimumP2P = "gossip + clever coding" - faster + leaner for high-throughput future needs If you're building something decentralized right now - Gossipsub is your go-to. If you're pushing the limits on speed/scalability - keep an eye on OptimumP2P-style approaches. @get_optimum

How OptimumP2P is redefining Ethereum block propagation Block propagation is one of the most critical bottlenecks in Ethereum today. Even small delays can impact validator performance, increase orphan risk, and reduce overall network efficiency. That’s where @get_optimum P2P comes in. The starting point Every validator receives transactions and blocks through its Ethereum client. But traditional propagation (GossipSub) isn’t optimized for speed or efficiency at scale. It relies on full-message forwarding which creates latency and bandwidth overhead. Introducing Optimum’s approach Optimum runs as a lightweight sidecar alongside the validator. No protocol changes. No permission required. Just plug in and start improving propagation instantly. Real-time data access Instead of waiting on standard gossip flow, the Optimum Agent reads block data directly from the validator node as soon as it’s available. This removes unnecessary delays at the source. Smarter data distribution Optimum uses RLNC (Random Linear Network Coding). Instead of sending full blocks, it encodes them into smaller data shards. Each shard carries partial information but enough to reconstruct the whole when combined. Parallel propagation advantage Here’s the key innovation: Nodes don’t need the full block to start forwarding. As soon as they receive shards, they can relay them across the network. This creates a highly parallel, fluid propagation system. Faster reconstruction Validators reconstruct the block once they receive enough shards. No need to wait for a single complete transmission. This dramatically reduces propagation time across geographically distributed nodes. Performance gains The result is clear: • 50%+ lower latency compared to GossipSub • Reduced bandwidth consumption • More consistent and reliable propagation Safe by design Optimum doesn’t replace Ethereum’s default networking. It works alongside it. GossipSub remains as a fallback — ensuring robustness and compatibility. Why it matters Better propagation leads to: → Faster block delivery → Improved validator efficiency → Lower missed opportunities → Stronger network performance The bigger picture In high-performance networks, propagation speed is alpha. OptimumP2P isn’t just an upgrade it’s infrastructure evolution. Better propagation → better validators → faster Ethereum. @get_optimum @blockchainjeff

Optimum is tackling this problem by upgrading the actual communication layer of the internet. It acts as a high-performance lane for data that was previously stuck in digital traffic. By using Random Linear Network Coding, the platform ensures that data packets reach their destination even if parts of the network are unreliable. This creates a foundation that is both resilient and incredibly fast. Current tests show that this approach can reduce data propagation times by massive margins. For validators and node operators, this translates to better sync speeds and much higher reliability. The project also introduces DeRAM, a decentralized memory layer that works like the RAM in your computer. It allows applications to read and write state information in real-time without the usual lag. This infrastructure is essential for the next generation of decentralized applications. High-frequency trading and complex AI models require the kind of low latency that only a dedicated memory layer can provide. The team behind the project brings deep academic expertise from MIT and years of industry experience. They are supported by a strong network of investors who understand the value of core infrastructure. As the industry moves toward mass adoption, the demand for faster and more reliable data layers will only grow. @get_optimum is positioning itself as the essential backbone for this new era of the web.
