Time to talk about Cape Town’s Tampon Towers and why they were allowed to be built so close to the base of Table Mountain… Quick facts about Disa Tower’s - 3 identical, cylindrical towers situated in Vredehoek, #CapeTown. 🟠 Built: 1960’s 🟠 Storeys: 18 each 🟠 Parking bays: 340 🟠 Cost to build: R3 million 🟠 Tower height: 54.86m each 🟠 Residential apartments: 287 🟠 Diameter of each tower: 24.384m 🟠 Construction by: Murray & Roberts 🟠 Completion date of all 3 towers: 1969 🟠 The tower names: Blinkwater, Platteklip, Silverstroom 🟠 Amenities include: tennis court, squash court, swimming pool, braai area Murray & Roberts found a loop hole in building restrictions on the base of Table Mountain which is how they got it right to build these towers in this location. They built the base of the towers below the allocated development line and then built upward above the line.  Apparently in the 1960’s/70’s there was a “white housing” crisis in the city. This led to the temporary suspension of all building regulations so that developers would be encouraged to build apartments in the white group areas. These developers could essentially build whatever they wanted. The son of the National Party finance minister at the time - Nico Diederichs - was a junior partner in the company that developed Disa Park. The conspiracists say his involvement would have also contributed to these controversial towers being built at this location. When the development was completed (the third tower only took 63 days to complete) - the apartments were available to let for between R55 - R160 per month. This rental amount included electricity and water. Famous for being a blight on the backdrop of the mountain, there were originally supposed to be 17 of these towers built. Thank goodness they stopped at 3😂 My followers tell me that the lifts are always broken and you can’t open your windows when its windy because they will blow off.  Do you have any memories connected to this building?
