@RuariJM @DeborahMeaden The price difference is actually around 10% - so, £20 on basic models. The cost per drying cycle is half that for older technology so a customer will recover that additional cost after just 20-30 cycles.

You mean... Let the market operate? At present, heat pump dryers are three to five times as expensive as the latest conventional models - which also feature some condensing elements - and it takes over five years to make up the difference. It could be that, in a couple of years, heat pump dryer tech will have improved & prices will have fallen to a competitive level. If they do, they will win the battle. If they don't, no amount of legislation will make it so. See "renewable energy" for other, real world examples.

@AaronSwney @SkyNews That's perfectly true. Just one problem: if you don't have valid visa, you won't be allowed onto the plane in Paris - or anywhere else for that matter. Airlines get heavily fined if they don't ensure passengers have a visa.

@SkyNews Flights from Paris to London for £29. You can seek asylum upon arrival in to London if you can prove your life is in danger. They come across the channel for a reason.

@NJ_Timothy @CCHQPress Shoplifting went through the roof because the last Tory effectively decriminalised all theft under £200. Labour have scrapped that.

What does it take for a shoplifter to go to prison under Labour? Thanks to their abolition of short term sentences, only 0.3% are projected to get a custodial sentence. No wonder shoplifting is through the roof. dailymail.com/news/article-1…

@sophie_summerz @ChildOfAlba Not necessarily. The Sentencing Guidelines are very broad, ranging from 4-19 years depending on the severity of the crime but with an option to impose a life sentence in the most extreme cases. The judge warned Ashby today that a life sentence was a possibility.

John Ashby has pleaded guilty to the religiously aggravated rape and assault of a Sikh woman he believed was Muslim. He followed her home from a bus, attacked her with a stick, strangled, and raped her while calling her a "Muslim bastard" and claiming he was a "British master." Sentencing is scheduled for Friday.

This morning I highlighted the Prime Minister's contemptuous treatment of the Speaker yesterday, demanded an apology to him and to the House, and pressed the Leader of the House on the fate of the Defence Investment Plan, which he promised WILL be published. youtu.be/08gxeNRBwCU

@piersmorgan @nadhimzahawi Just an hour later, we now know that neither Starmer nor Lammy were aware of the security clearance issue. Should they have known given Mandelson's colourful past. Probably. But that's not the same as lying. Even you know that Piers.....

@griffitha @CCHQPress £15bn is a drop in the ocean compared with the £3.0 trillion debt the country was saddled with because of the previous government. It's thoroughly depressing that all you can do is snipe and talk down the country. You should be ashamed.

This is a landmark moment. 4.92%! Unlike during the global financial crisis, markets are functioning well today but have demanded an eye-watering price on the UK's prospects. The core issue is lack of trust in the Chancellor and the serial lack of headroom every time she presents a forecast. The 'print' of this deal will cost everyone in the UK.
Mohamed A. El-Erian@elerianm

As detailed in the press release below, the UK completed its largest-ever issuance of Gilts, which carried the highest issuance yield in almost twenty years. #economy #markets #uk #bonds

@DanNeidle Good result but the real scandal is that HMRC and the professional bodies do very little to prevent dodgy tax avoidance schemes. Instead of targeting "advisers", HMRC go after the "little people" - many, if not most, of whom will have been seduced by slick sales patter.

An update on the attempt by a tax barrister to sue me for £8m. Last month, the High Court threw out the claim. The Court then made a highly unusual order: Mr Kamal was required to pay all of our costs, £146,644. And today I received payment in full.

This is Walker Smith. After dedicating 17 years to Waitrose, he was recently dismissed. The reason? For attempting to stop a shoplifter nicking Easter eggs. Yes you read that right. He should be applauded, not sacked. Shameful @waitrose. Re-employ Walker Smith!

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PHONE OUT IN PUBLIC IN CENTRAL LONDON! Was stood waiting to cross the road at corner Marble Arch and Oxford Street just now and turned to see bloke on very fast electric bike heading up behind me. I turned and he turned away. I stood and watched as it was obvious what was going to happen next and sure enough, he snatched the phone of a young woman stood at the bus stop. Then off down Oxford Street for more. Face fully covered. If we had a police force in London this could easily be stopped, but instead, dozens of people a day have their lives made shit by these vermin. I’m in a shop writing this. Put your phone away on the streets. Take care. Be safe.

@TamsinLisa @London_W4 @SeraphimMarq There were 70,000 phone thefts in London last year (15% down on 2024 btw). 70,000 too many but still only 1 per hundred residents). For context, unless you go around waving your phone in public, on your one day trip to London, you have a 1 in 36,500 chance of an issue.

This would be more valid if Bodyshop and Ted Baker hadn’t gone into administration before Labour came in and Carpetright just 19 days after… I haven’t checked the rest but… really? It is tough and will get tougher but a bit of balance here… the ONS is a good source of accurate facts…

@keebsonx @andytwelves My aunt, a primary schoolteacher in Glasgow in the 80s, used to talk about the challenge of kids coming to school with poor English. She also used to talk about how those kids routinely outperformed their "local" peers by the time they moved to secondary education Next

EXC: .@GoodwinMJ’s new book “Suicide of a Nation: Immigration, Islam, Identity” is out now, and I’m only 5 chapters in and have found a huge amount of what appears to be false quotes and basic misinterpretations of data, that appear to be AI hallucinations. Matthew, can you explain the claims you made in the book that I’ve outlined in the below thread?
