Tezpur University used to represent everything Assam hoped for: quality education, research leadership, and institutional pride rooted in the legacy of the Assam Accord. But today, it is caught in the middle of a deep institutional crisis. Administrative misconduct, financial irregularities, falling NIRF rankings, faculty shortages, stalled recruitments, and widespread dissatisfaction among students and staff have pushed the University into a state of turmoil. The recent unrest following the insensitive conduct of the Vice Chancellor has further exposed how fragile the University’s governance has become. I have written to the Prime Minister urging immediate corrective action. Tezpur University’s decline must be addressed with transparency, seriousness, and accountability so that this institution can once again fulfil the promise it was created for.

Soumyashree Bisi, 20, a B.Ed student at Fakir Mohan College, Balasore, approached her HoD, Samir Kumar Sahu, for help with her low attendance. Sahu allegedly demanded sexual favours in return. She got angry and left, but he kept repeating the demand and threatened to lower her marks if she refused. On July 1, She filed a complaint against Sahu with college authorities. During the internal probe, she realised the college was protecting the HoD. As an ABVP member, she hoped for help from the BJP govt at the state and centre. She created an X account and tagged the Odisha CM, state ministers, union education minister, NCW and others for help, but no one responded. On July 10, the internal committee cleared the HoD. Principal Dilip Ghosh offered her “counseling” and told her to withdraw the complaint, warning she could be rusticated. On July 12, she staged a protest on campus, met the principal and HoD, then poured petrol on herself outside the principal’s office and set herself on fire. She died two days later in hospital. When alive, she begged and pleaded with everyone, hoping someone would listen. No one did. Once she hurt herself, suddenly everyone woke up for damage control. HoD Sahu was arrested, and Principal Ghosh suspended. The Higher Education Dept launched an inquiry; NCW and NHRC began probes. President Murmu visited. The Governor sought a report. NHRC and UGC issued directives; the govt told colleges to ensure ICC compliance. CM Majhi promised strict action and ₹20 lakh compensation. All students should be equal in the eyes of the rulers. But if a student loyal to your ideology begs your govt for help and still dies like this, it’s betrayal by the very system and party she trusted. Shame on Odisha govt. Shame on BJP.
