While most of us escape the heat indoors, delivery partners continue riding through scorching streets to keep our daily lives running. Last year, Chennai introduced a thoughtful solution. The Greater Chennai Corporation set up an air conditioned rest lounge for gig workers, giving delivery riders a safe place to pause during long shifts. The space can accommodate around 25 people and offers comfortable seating, drinking water, toilets, mobile charging points, and security. For workers who spend 10 to 12 hours outdoors, these small comforts can make a big difference. A short break in a cool space helps them recharge before getting back on the road. As India prepares for another intense summer, this initiative shows how cities can start thinking about the people who keep urban life running. Do you think every Indian city should create cooling spaces for gig workers? In the 1940s, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was committed to his teaching role at the University of Chicago, despite being based at the Yerkes Observatory. Each week, he traveled 80 miles to teach a special course attended by only two students. The students were Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen-Ning Yang. They proved their mentor's faith was well-placed when they both won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957, years before Chandrasekhar received the same honor in 1983. Remarkably, this course went down in history as the only one where every attendee received a Nobel Prize, underscoring the extraordinary impact of Chandrasekhar's dedication and teaching. 📷 AIP Emilio Segrè Visual Archives, Physics Today Collection

#pollution killing the planet
Mumbai opens to the Arabian Sea on one side → sea breezes disperse dust & pollutants easily, even with scattered 70+ floor towers Pune is surrounded by hills/mountains → acts like a bowl, trapping everything. Add dense, continuous ~22-floor building clusters & massive construction → pollutants & dust have nowhere to go That's why Pune's haze hits harder! Min. Windspeed in Mumbai is 3m/s Min. Windspeed in Pune is 0.3m/s as per the @mpcb_official Mobile van data

Was at Pune for a few hours yesterday. The dust from construction there is unbelievable. If you think Mumbai construction standards with regards to pollution are bad - then you will be shocked with Pune.

Day 1 of the AI Impact Summit turned to be a pain for us. I came genuinely excited, it was the first time the summit was being hosted in India, and I wanted to show up personally to support the ecosystem and the government’s push. But what happened next was shocking. At 12 noon, security personnel arrived to sanitise and cordon off the area ahead of the visit by PM Modi visit at 2pm. I explained that we’re building India’s first patented AI wearable at NeoSapien and requested a chance to showcase it. One officer told others to let me stay, and they left. Then another group came and ordered us to leave immediately. Seemed like there was lack of co-ordination between the security itself. I asked: “Should we take our wearables?” They said, others are leaving even laptops behind, security will take care. Trusting them, I left. Hoping that the wearables will be safe, and If I am lucky, it might catch the eye of PM Modi. Gates were closed from 12–6pm. Much much longer than expected. Later we found out that our wearables were stolen. Think about this: We paid for flights, accommodation, logistics and even the booth. Only to see our wearables disappear inside a high-security zone. If only security and official entourage had access, how did this happen? This is extremely disappointing.

@thebetterindia I too am a similar old woman who stands on the footpath preventing two wheelers from riding on it . I tell them the entire road is for them. Footpaths are meant for those on foot. They still dont get it. They feel entitled ...

Sometimes, real change begins with one person refusing to move. At a busy signal in Kozhikode, an elderly woman calmly stood her ground when a scooter rider tried to use the footpath to skip traffic. She simply reminded him that walking spaces belong to people, not vehicles. And eventually, he turned back. Sometimes, being a responsible citizen just means saying, “This is not right.” Would you have done the same? A British woman has won a landmark court case that is drawing global attention to the unintended consequences of LED street lighting. By presenting scientific and environmental evidence, she successfully demonstrated that certain LED street lamps were negatively affecting human health while also causing harm to local wildlife. The ruling ordered the removal of the lights, marking a rare legal acknowledgment of light pollution as a public health and ecological issue rather than a mere nuisance. The case highlighted how high-intensity LED lighting can disrupt human circadian rhythms by interfering with natural sleep cycles and melatonin production. Prolonged exposure to artificial blue-rich light at night has been linked to sleep disorders, stress, and metabolic disturbances. Beyond human health, the court examined evidence showing that LED street lamps disorient bats, insects, and birds, interfering with feeding, migration, and reproduction. Insects are particularly vulnerable, which creates cascading effects across entire ecosystems that rely on them. This ruling sets an important precedent by recognizing environmental light exposure as a factor worthy of legal protection. It reinforces the idea that technological progress must be balanced with biological and ecological considerations. While LED lighting is energy efficient, this case shows that design, intensity, and placement matter. The outcome encourages cities to rethink urban lighting strategies that protect human health and biodiversity while still meeting safety and infrastructure needs. #NutraFacts #fblifestyle #LightPollution #Wildlife #Health
