Jason, my wife’s cousin, and his family made it through #hurricaneMelissa. Damage at their resort in Montego Bay is surprisingly light, but elsewhere, things are catastrophic. Recovery now begins and Jamaica will need a LOT of help.
@RoyallyKim@iCyclone I really don’t know! My dive watch beeped as it thought I was underwater due to the pressure. Very strange feeling. No houses were spared damage of some kind in Dorian where we were.
HELPFUL TIPS. I've been through 82 hurricanes around the world, including five Cat 5s. I survived them by following a few simple rules. Check them out. And let me know if you have questions. I'm here to help. We're gonna get through #Hurricane#MELISSA.👊
@SWFLWX@Reganslr@iCyclone Yes. There’s that. I’m not in JA at the mo. In touch w/ young male relatives. & they’re laid back about it bc it’s slow moving & they’re just waiting around. I send them info to let them know it’s coming & it’s lethal. I’m on their case not to be complacent.
@SWFLWX@JcanQueen@iCyclone Yes, our island, Elbow Cay was decimated with no houses untouched but a few nautical miles away to the south you could see where the core ended. Dorian was small but ferocious.
@JcanQueen@Reganslr@iCyclone Probably, it has been slow moving.
I wonder if some are going to think it was overblown if the core misses their town or city at first, and then find out it pretty much decimated the other half of the island.
It's looking like Kingston will be spared the brunt of this.
Hurricane intensity inferred by satellite:
Dorian (2019) vs. Melissa (2025)
ADT: T 6.5 vs. T 8.0
Dorian had 160-knot winds from observations (NHC) while Melissa at 145-knots.
Sept 1 Bahamas vs. Oct 27 south of Jamaica
@fstoppers@iCyclone When the pressure dropped very low in the second half one of the hurricane proof windows gave way. The whole house then exploded and we ran to a utility room at the back of the house. We were very lucky to make it. There were multiple tornadoes within the hurricane too.
@Reganslr@iCyclone I live in a concrete house myself. How does it explode? Did the windows and doors not vent out the pressure enough or something else? That sounds horrifying
Melissa's slow crawl while strengthening to category 5 is very reminiscent of Dorian 2019, except the eyewall is thankfully not impacting any land areas.
Sadly, it's forecast to turn toward Jamaica tonight & make landfall there tomorrow... as a category 5.
Stay strong, Jamaica.
@MatthewCappucci We were completely unprepared for what happened in Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. We were on an island well-experienced with strong hurricanes and it was horrendous. Sat over us for two days. The concrete house we were in exploded. Thinking of Jamaica.
Here's a map of all Category 4 hurricanes that have hit Jamaica.
Notice anything? There haven't been any since at least the 1880s.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center is anticipating Melissa to make landfall as a mid- to high-tier Category 4.
I understand many residents of Jamaica are confident. I worry some may be overconfident. Not a single lifelong resident of the island has experienced a Category 4 landfall before.
As someone who has, let me be the be clear – this will be a very memorable experience.
"Melissa... could be the strongest direct landfall for the island in since tropical cyclone record keeping has been made in the Atlantic Basin," wrote the National Hurricane Center.
I understand Jamaica believes itself to be a hurricane-ready nation. Indeed, you have weathered many storms.. Category 1s, Category2s... and, in 1988, Gilbert hit as a Category 3.
A Category 4 storm is an order of magnitude more destructive than a Category 2. Hurricane wind impact increases exponentially. Surge will be more severe, and inland freshwater flooding will be locally extreme. Mudslides will be common, and some areas will be isolated for a week or more.
Please err on the side of caution.
6 years ago today, Hurricane Dorian stalled out over the islands of Great Abaco and Grand Bahama for nearly 24 consecutive hours with sustained winds of Category 5 strength.
Few Atlantic satellite loops are as spine-chilling as this.

If we allow for ECMWF tending to over-accumulate from showers, there's now good agreement on the general distribution of rainfall across the UK & Ireland this weekend.
Against all odds, it appears my area of NE Dorset will remain one of the driest areas for a couple more days.
Rocket parts found on the beach in Elbow Cay Bahamas yesterday. Part of the fairing of the New Glen Rocket from a January launch. Interesting find. #rocket#blueorigin@blueorigin#space
And people will even argue that “I could care less” makes sense when you consider that it’s said sarcastically, which is the biggest bit of ‘reverse engineering a mistake to try to make it make sense’ ever.
A small hill I will die on:
“I could care less” is not right. It is not the same as “I couldn’t care less” (which is correct). In fact, it’s the complete opposite. It simply does not make sense.
Last week, I finished converting a larger box for the tawnies. I have a camera mounted inside, but mounted the Helarctos trail cam on a branch outside to monitor visitors. Turn up the volume to hear this pair discussing the merits of this new abode!
