@RevJaredJones I agree with you Jared. 1662 and 1928 are very simple to use. The problem for me is: I’ve never attended an Anglican Church that provides prayer books in the pews. Part of the reason for this is because most people don’t follow the order set forth in the book! 😂

The problem with this, of course, is that the 79 BCP is nearly unusable for people, especially new people. There’s a bazillion different options for stuff and it is completely overwhelming to people
Parish Recluse™️ in Eastertide@parishrecluse

My second short piece for The Anglican Way, in which I encourage parishes to consider abandoning or paring down their printed weekly bulletins to use the BCPs in our pews, instead. (Though I know this would be difficult for parishes that make use of supplemental materials...)

@discipulusjesu I like to remind all our Evangelical brethren that Wesley said that it was a Christian duty to pray for the departed.

Super interesting read on this is John Wesley in Company with High Churchmen by H.W. Holden Helpful in breaking down the false dichotomy between evangelical preaching and high church principles. It’s not either/or
Evan Sustar@EvanSus96

@ShaneRaynor @MethodistView To me, Wesley is pretty clear on standard baptismal regeneration. He even says, “I am a high churchmen and the son of a highchurchmen.”

As a protestant, you have to church shop to find the pastor who agrees with your interpretation of scripture. As a Catholic, you assent to the interpretation handed down by the Sacred written and oral tradition of the Apostles and their Successors.

@PLeithart I literally was just watching the movie Becket two nights ago and said to my wife: “This is relevant considering Trumps battle with the Pope.” Crazy!

"Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" asked Donald Trump on Truth Social a few days ago, referring to Pope Leo XIV. No, wait. That wasn't President Trump. That was Henry II, and he was talking about Thomas Becket, who was protecting the church of England from a meddlesome king. Some of Henry's courtiers (with or without his permission) took it upon themselves to rid their king of the nuisance. They murdered Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. He said (so legend has it) that he died "for the Name of Jesus and in defense of His church." You can understand my confusion. Both Henry II and President Trump bristle at being told what to do by mere clergymen. Both think they have some say in who gets to Pope. "I don't want a Pope who . . ." Trump said repeatedly. One doesn't need to be Roman Catholic to think Trump, like Henry, needs a lesson in basic ecclesiology. The church is independent of every nation and ruler. She may not bow to any king but King Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth. And the church must rebuke kings, judges, and generals when they abuse the sword God has given them. The church lives within Psalm 2 and warns kings and rulers to kiss the Son or face His terrifying rod.

You absolutely love to see it: "We seek to embody this vision through the rich heritage of classical Anglicanism — Daily Morning and Evening Prayer, the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, Choral Evensong, and the majestic pipe organ — all within one of Buffalo's most stunning historic landmarks. 193 Elk Street is a National Register of Historic Places Gothic Revival masterpiece, built in 1888. We are working to purchase and restore this cathedral-scale building as a permanent home for worship that is good, true, and beautiful — open and welcoming to all who seek Christ."

@RivesGentry1 @OSacrumCorIesu I think the only thing on this list that was assigned reading when I was at seminary was 𝘌𝘤𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 Lots of university education now happens through secondary sources, e.g., we were assigned JND Kelly, 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴

@OSacrumCorIesu This is Pusey's. He assumes you are already ‘well acquainted with the letter of Holy Scripture’ and have done ‘a careful study of the Historical Books of the Old Testament’: neither of which I'm convinced is true for most ordinands. anglicanhistory.org/pusey/letters/…

@curiouscurate @TheAnglicanWay This sounds great. Love Newbigin I've been wrestling with the three predominant views of Episcopacy and trying to figure out where I land. I think I'm on the Plene Esse front, but I work for a non profit missions organization, and want to be very careful not to unchurch people.

I had the honor of writing a short piece on Lesslie Newbigin for @TheAnglicanWay magazine. They do great work and the subscription is well worth it.

@HwsEleutheroi RC Sproul loved Thomas Aquinas and was also outraged at "Evangelicals and Catholics Together," even losing his friendship with J.I. Packer over it (not a great move imo). Reading and enjoying Thomas does not necessarily take one to Rome.

So word started circulating today about a former Davenant lecturer/writer, Ryan Hurd. He swam the Tiber because...Thomas Aquinas told him to do so. Note his words in the graphic below. At the same time, we have the Thomistic Ecumenical movement taking place (see link). And who is involved? Matthew Barrett? Who could have seen THAT happening say, oh, four, five years ago? No, not expecting any apology letters from all the RBs who just chucked me right out the door for being such a reactionary. :-) donnelly.edu/aquinas-kc

@barrelagedfaith I hear this one makes a good argument for Calvins participatory views. Also Hans Boersma (mister patristic participation himself) has written good stuff on Calvin.

Calvinists will often accuse Orthodox Christianity of being 'semi-pelagian.' This is utterly false & Fr. Stephen DeYoung proposes that Calvinism is actually much closer to semi-pelagianism b/c they reject our real participation in the life of God in His uncreated energy

@danitreweek Hi Danni, I’ve listened to various interviews and read article articles by people in this and they keep bringing up that a female AB of Canterbury was the last straw. Which baffles my mind because women in holy orders, even episcopate, is not mentioned in the Jerusalem statement.

@michaeljknowles Thomas More may have been morally upstanding, but the only reason Pope Clement VII denied Henrys annulment is because Catherines nephew literally put him under house arrest. Additionally: Pope Eugene III anulled a royal marriage for what was essentially irreconcilable diffs.
