The Tipping Point for Oil Many people are asking why oil prices haven’t risen and crossed the previous highs despite the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb. If you remember oil surged to around US$125 as markets priced the immediate shock and feared the worst. But as it became clear that inventories, softer demand and alternative supplies could cushion the disruption, prices retreated. The key point is this: inventories are not infinite. Oil markets can remain deceptively calm. Once reserves approach critical levels, the market stops pricing probabilities and starts pricing an unavoidable physical shortage. That is when prices can simply erupt.

Until the buffers run out, the news cycle will work. That’s not manipulation it’s just physics. You however cannot talk your way out of an actual shortage. The world isn’t in a genuine crude shortage yet. That’s exactly why the “manipulation” argument collapses. When real shortages hit, no amount of talking changes the barrels. Because there is no real CRUDE shortage right now, you can talk the market down. Apparently this is rocket science for some. I’m a massive oil bull. What I’m not is a massive oil bullshitter. US commercial crude stocks are down 1.7% YoY as of this week. That leaves jawbone risk on #WTI until levels actually get tight. Fear porn doesn’t draw down commercial inventories, physical supply draws do. Levels will get low on their own schedule, not on the news schedule. Once supply is low enough the news will have ZERO control over price. Patience.
