Some personal news! I’m joining @CBSNews and @TheFP, and @schoolofwarpod is moving to a new home at The Free Press. Check out a live-streamed episode of School of War at noon ET today with former CENTCOM commander General Frank McKenzie, where we’ll unpack the war in Iran.

@mattduss the ballistic missiles were a deterrent as they progressed in their nuclear efforts, your inability to activate system 2 thinking makes sense when I see you were a foreign policy advisor for bernie sanders

Israel didn’t face an existential risk, it faced a growing Iranian missile deterrent which threatened to constrain its ability to bomb whenever it wants. The threat it faced was to the complete freedom of action to which it now feels entitled.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

Cotton: "Israel faced an existential risk and they were prepared to strike Iran alone. If that happened, Iran was very likely to target our troops. That may address the question of 'why now.'"

@liensofnewyork because there is blood in the water, presenting the greatest opportunity we likely will ever have to take out an adversarial regime that we’ve been in a proxy war with for nearly five decades

I think the weakest part of the administrations argument for attacking Iran is not the why, but the why now. Statements have been inconsistent and if the journal reporting is correct, it appears the most imminent threat was that Israel was going to attack them regardless of our involvement.

@ChrisO_wiki @DPJHodges seems very Trumpian to only pick a side once the dust settles and the winner has been determined many leaders severely lacking a stern backbone

@DPJHodges I remember when the invasion of Iraq was hailed as a triumph, and France was bitterly condemned for staying out of it. What may seem like an obvious truth now may look very different in a few months or years' time. Snap judgements rarely hold up well over time.

The decision to attack Iran, kill its Supreme Leader and introduce regime change is one of the most significant strategic geopolitical moments of the past century. It dwarfs the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. For the British government to not even be able to express an opinion on unfolding events is an abdication of the most basic responsibility that comes with national governance.
Kevin Schofield@KevinASchofield

Laura Kuenssberg: "Is Britain is on the side of those 2 countries who have killed Iran's Supreme Leader?" John Healey: "I think people watching will want to know that Britain is on top of what's necessary to keep them safe." Which isn't a yes.

Weird that with all of these files released about the atrocities committed mostly by men on young women and girls, the only person currently in jail is a woman and the highest profile job was lost by a woman.

A lot of people are talking about how AI is increasing their productivity and driving efficiency in their investment processes. But to me it seems like most are just ingesting more noise and I am skeptical that this is leading to higher quality or more profitable investment decisions. Meanwhile I’m listening to earnings calls live, thinking deeply and *doing less* more than ever, and haven’t used an LLM for work in months - and feel like I’ve never seen things more clearly. Maybe the research alpha isn’t in the output or summary compilation of the data but in the neurological connections and understanding developed from wrestling with the primary material directly. Never been more convinced less is more (the irony of writing this past midnight on a Friday night is not lost on me either).

There were capital allocators that I respect that went big into fiber capex a few years ago ( $NNI & $TCX come to mind) where I believe they were thinking ~20% IRRs. Appears like results have been no where close to that (at least yet) - what happened? FWA?
