NWS Weather Prediction Center
The forecast 7 day QPF shows a swath of 2-6 inches from the Southern Plains to the Upper Mississippi Valley. A minimum in precipitation is evident across the Southeast. This weather pattern is remarkably similar to the April precipitation anomalies !

Even though some areas have seen a bit of an uptick with the number of days with rain lately, it has really been a while for many areas since we last saw a month finish with above normal precipitation. At some locations you would have to go back to last May to achieve that.

It's been a dry start to 2026 across the Southeast. This past month did not help as it one of the drier Aprils on record. For several locations, the total precipitation for January through April of this year ranks as the driest 4 month such period ever recorded.

A dry weather pattern has also resulted in a very quiet spring severe weather season. Looking back each year through today's date, we have issued the fewest number of Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings since 2015. #ncwx

#NorthCarolina with the driest October thru March on record, dating back to 1895. Yet, only 22% of the state is in extreme drought, compared to 70% for FL and GA, which each saw their 3rd driest such period. Is the drought in NC actually worse than depicted in the latest #USDM?

Some early 90°+ max temps. are headed to the region. For the @RDUAirport Area data the longest April Streak of 90°+ is 7 days back in 1941. The most recent streak was in 2002 at 3-days. sercc.oasis.unc.edu/StreakPerspect… Change the Station ID in URL to check the AP near you.. @NWSRaleigh
