You can be a "case" in the meningitis outbreak even if you don't have meningitis.

@jetpen Bit of a leap. What's the point of having verified accounts if they're not actually verified to be human? Verification has existed since the inception of social media.

It feels like the overall experience of social media has dropped significantly in the last few months. It's not unique to this platform, but all of the ones I use. Am I alone in this sentiment?

Who hurt you? Seriously. Meningitis has been infecting and killing young people for the last 100+ years. There is absolutely nothing strange or new about a highly contagious pathogen spreading through a population of young people in close proximity...it is literally textbook epidemiology.

Can anyone remind me why everyone from journalists to software engineers to gym trainers are suddenly allowed to spew absolute bullshit regarding medicine? We are talking about medical facts on human lives, not "opinions" Case in point: Meningitis. It is highly contagious, it is devastating. Spreading medical lies shouldn't just be frowned upon...it should be a non-bailable offense.
Jacqui Deevoy@JacquiDeevoy1

Meningitis is NOT contagious, so what’s with all the nonsense? As my friend Kat Watkins says on FB today: “Meningitis is an infection in the brain caused by toxins passing the blood brain barrier. You cannot 'catch' it, it's not contagious 🙄🙄 So all this closing of schools is just theatre. It's to scare you into making sure you jab yourselves and your kids up. How many of those who have presented with meningitis, had the covid vax? Since its a side effect? As well as a side effect of many other jabs 🤷🤷”

I find it deeply concerning to celebrate the targeting of individuals in this manner, regardless of their affiliations. It's essential to prioritize diplomacy and peaceful resolutions over military actions that can escalate tensions and lead to further violence. Our focus should be on fostering understanding and dialogue.

Israel's intelligence is next-level: 4 IRGC commanders in Lebanon tried to hide. They booked 15 hotel rooms under false names, and used only 1 room. They disabled all hotel security cameras. All 4 were killed today with a single missile to their room. No hotel guest was harmed.

Goh.

Hellish day in A&E. The doctors and nurses are working flat out but the constant stream of patients is just too much. When I was a kid if you went to A&E you saw people with broken arms and bloody eye patches, things cut off or sticking out of their head. Today it was just people who couldn't get a GP appointment. Why do we not have enough doctor's surgeries in this country? Is it financially unviable to run one, too expensive to become a GP, or no longer a sought after career? What the hell is going on?

sorry buddy. I know your child is dying of cancer and there’s nothing technically stopping you from spending 100k to make an n=1 experimental vaccine to give him more time but have you thought about safety and efficacy and the ramifications on the healthcare system if everyone were to take matters into their own hands

H. Pylori, prof of microbiology at my alma mater knew him personally My point is that patients are increasingly well informed, with AI they can position themselves at the current research edge. There are a lot of smart people out there that will do careful and well managed self experimentation aided by AGI, regulators will be several steps behind. I believe that we as a profession are better off being open and supportive rather than paternalistic and dismissive, people will do it anyway and it likely goes better if we are part of the process

@Dominanski @Plinz Oh it might not work is not a great message to give to someone dying from cancer. Also remember that COVID vaccines that barely worked were rolled out to healthy people with low chance of dying from COVID.

What I’m telling you and others is that the ethics/permissions angle is the wrong one. The tech is real but it is not 100% effective and there are several tech variants + significant cancer heterogeneity to contend with. Saying that it is gated by bureaucracy is misrepresenting the real issues

@KeenanPeachy I served in the navy and we had no way to read transponders and somehow we were able to navigate the Messina straits and the straits of Gibraltar and see how the ships we needed to. Do you think Iran can’t see the Greek ships on radar?

The study was conducted in a context of China’s zero-COVID policy transitioning to mass Omicron spread in late 2022, where vaccination coverage was high but the analysis does not account for or differentiate based on it! Hence, an important word is missing from the title. It should read: ‘Persistent attenuation of lymphocyte subsets after mass SC-2 VACCINE-BREAKTHROUGH infection’.

Royal Navy stans: We have two carriers so in a crisis we always have one carrier ready to deploy, unlike the French, which have just one carrier. Now we have a crisis: left image: the 1 French carrier right image: the 2 UK carriers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@noclador So what do you think the UK should do? Go all in with comparatively scarce resources which will make little difference (no offence intended)? Join in any brain fart decision to bomb someone? Get bullied by MAGA into mad escapades? Tell us.

Two 🇬🇧 aircraft carriers? Come on now 😂😂 The UK doesn't have the escorts, doesn't have the fighters, doesn't have the personnel to deploy two carriers. The UK needs the US Marine Corps to lend it F-35Bs and the US Navy to lend it a destroyer to even deploy one (!) carrier.

ANNE APPLEBAUM: "Regarding Russia, the quantity of Patriot air-defense missiles, that has been used in just the last few days [in the Middle East] would have been enough to protect Ukrainian cities from the devastating blows to the electricity system over the past couple of months. The United States has made a choice: it doesn't want to protect Ukraine or help Ukraine survive the war. Instead, we've decided to use that same capacity for this war of choice, one with an unclear outcome, against Iran. And the Europeans have seen that. The Ukrainians have seen it."
