Ayn Rand never understood capitalism as it actually exists and so she created this fantasy version of it wherein all the downsides or contradictions were actually a byproduct of “statism” or “collectivism” as opposed to the market itself —- imo it was because she resented the soviets so much, she didn’t didn’t want to admit Marx was right about *anything* including a lot of observations he made about how Capitalism works that are now regarded completely mainstream, even among non-Marxists.

Ayn Rand: "Under a free system, no one could acquire a monopoly on anything. If you look at economics, and economic history, you will discover that all monopolies have been established with government help."

@Quincey_Morris_ @Arduous_Hope @river_is_nice If there is government, capital will corrupt it. If there is no government, capital will make one. Every time. There will never be a steady state solution where owners of capital feel like they have enough. There will always be a need for endless growth at any cost.

Capitalism is not an entity, it's an observation of the natural way markets work within human societies, all based on natural order and human behavior, as such, it does not "create what it wants". Saying there is no such thing as "without government help" is oversimplifying the issue and my statement. Here's an example of what I mean, government help is good for protecting citizens and nature, like the national parks system, and helping citizens recover from natural disasters etc. Government influence is NOT good when it goes against nature, or when it helps one group of people(like a corporation) suppress natural competition with other groups of people. Government has its place, but when lobbying and regulatory capture are the norm, that's how monopolies are able to thrive.

@BoomerTiro @peoplesposting @river_is_nice This is a feature of capitalism, not a bug. Capitalism exists only to serve the owners of capital, and it's doing just that as you describe it. Capital will always create governments and corruption that suits it, because that is how it grows.

@peoplesposting @river_is_nice Right now the big businesses that should have fallen are protected from their failures. "Too big to fail" does not exist in capitalism, only too big to last. Without an official class system the government and corporations have still reduced us to fuedal serfs.

@Quincey_Morris_ @Arduous_Hope @river_is_nice It's pointless because there's no such thing as "without government help". There will always be government influence or intervention. It's silly to base any reasoning on the contrary. Monopolies are a feature of capitalism because capitalism will always create what it wants.

I'm not anti-government, I believe that state power should exist for the sole purpose of protecting its civilians. The problem is corruption leading to corporatism and cronyism(which is just fascism but I hold off on using that term because it's loaded now.) All I was saying is that Rand was correct about monopolies, and nobody has been able to name even one yet.

@kaizen000000000 This is a false hypothetical. Murder is clearly wrong. You don’t need religion to know that! Why? Because it is the golden rule. Every murderer is a hypocrite because they don’t want to be murdered. I am not a religious person, but most ppl need religion to feel comfortable

@wesleytypes @MegaCrit I hate that there is a "funny" tag among the "helpful" and "unhelpful" review tags. Like what benefit does having a funny review do for the game or the consumer? Just encourages more dumb reviews like "terrible game I hate it" from someone with 5k hours in it

> sell 3 million copies in the first week > reach a player peak of over 500,000 > receive universal praise on release So how does Slay the Spire II currently have a "Mixed" rating on Steam? Because Steam user reviews are not really reviews in the traditional sense. Instead, they're used as a bargaining chip to communicate real time grievances with game updates, bugs, and developer choices at the expense of a game's actual overall quality and reputation. This is one of the many reasons why I don't trust user reviews and scores.

@Androkguz @61harpy @HunterEKozak @esjesjesj The value that differentiates the costs of the cuts does not come from the butchering, it comes from breeding, rearing, and so on. Labor still affects the value because tech advancements lower the labor cost of producing the cows and their beef.

@J_Frieds @Feldfrog You are being incoherent. Benny wants the focus to be on Israel but dumb antisemites make it about Jews. He isn't making it about Jews by saying "we should not make it about Jews" he is doing the opposite.

@Feldfrog You’re making my point. The “reason that’s rising” is Israel, but instead of focusing on Israel, you’re talking about Jewish victimhood. Reading some ADL statistics and accepting their hysterical paranoia that this ends with camps, or something. Which brings me back to: grow up

the structural thing going on imo is content unbundling. it used to be that stuff came as a package: you'd get an episode with some plot, some jokes, some surfing, some vampire stuff, and maybe even a moral message. but now you can assemble your own content mix out of youtube, tiktok, instagram, etc. shows still exist obviously, but they're relegated to more prestigious types of storytelling where everything we see needs to have a "point" and progress the overall story. this is where studios still have a competitive advantage over random internet creators.
