Even when they had access to schools, the rebuilding efforts were tremendous in the aftermath of the TPLF occupation of Amhara and Afar lands. This is the context from which we need to frame recent violent attacks against schools in the Amhara region. Let’s revisit the Amhara region in 2022 in the aftermath of the war in the Amhara region's historical Wollo Province before the Prosperity party government declared the current genocidal campaign against the Amhara people. Mersa is one of dozens of towns and cities that line the A2 road that stretches from Addis Ababa to Mekelle. In July of 2021 the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) invaded the Amhara and Afar regions after the Ethiopian Government called for a unilateral cease-fire after 8 months of war. As the TPLF invaded the regions, they are accused of committing numerous atrocities along with large scale looting and destruction of resources in particular in the Amhara region. Schools, hospitals, banks and local government infrastructure were principal targets of the TPLF. During the TPLF occupation of Mersa, the Mersa Elementary School served as a make-shift camp for TPLF fighters. During the 5 month occupation, the school was virtually destroyed. Blackboards were used as beds while the schools brand new library stocked with books donated largely by US based alumni was completely trashed. A child was found bleeding profusely, having been shot and separated from his mother. His mother, Asbera Mohammed Nur, was killed. She was a mother of two from Asagirt Wereda, North Shewa Zone, specifically from Soten Kebele. She had traveled to Bereket Wereda and was on her way back home when she was shot by government forces. On October 10, 2024 around 2:00 pm, she was killed in a place called Kebele 03. When community members arrived at the scene, they found the child, approximately two years old, shot and bleeding next to his mother's body.
