One of my matchmaking clients in Austin, who also dates in SoCal, plans a San Diego trip to meet a match he’s excited about. The day before his flight, she texts him to cancel ☹️ Huge bummer, if this is always a risk when planning travel for dates. Anyway, last night he’s at dinner in Austin with a new match, who’s prettier than San Diego match, and out of nowhere… San Diego match walks into the restaurant. (Maybe not 100% out of nowhere, she has family in Austin, but still a crazy coincidence...) My client makes eyes with her. San Diego match texts me this morning, saying she changed her mind again, and wants to meet him... Wdyt? I have mixed feelings 😒

Not every customer is a good customer 🙃 Revenue does not always equal profit, and that’s an age old issue in any business, which makes perfect sense the way you broke this down for matchmaking. Do you ever build “escalators” into your agreements (specifically when you sense it’s a tough client)? Very interesting concept. Would also be interesting to know your DQ criteria for clients and how often you have to turn around and tell people, tactfully, that “we” (they) aren’t a good fit 😂

Why is matchmaking expensive? To illustrate, here’s how I’ll lose money on a client’s $49,000 package. Client is 46, 6’2, exited tech founder. He’s looking for a woman 27-33, very specific criteria around match personality, appearance, and profession. Without diving into specifics, she: • Isn’t easily searchable online... • Isn’t likely to reply when we find her… • Isn’t likely to be single… • Often has a deal-breaker trait we can’t screen for without a phone call… • Isn’t necessarily interested in my client… I was expecting this to be a difficult search, so I quoted $49,000. I wasn’t expecting ~100 hours of labor to find each match, not including communication with the client! To date I’ve spent $45,000 on salaries for the women staffed on his search, plus $2,750 on styling and photos, and we still owe the client 2 matches... Before considering overhead (let alone opportunity cost) this will be a huge L financially. Things balance out though. Most engagements are profitable. Some engagements are quite profitable. For example, a new client in NYC paid $30,000 and paused after his first match, because he’s 99% sure we found his wife. That's still a new relationship, and engagements last 9 months (6 months of active matching + up to 3 months of pause), so we could be on the hook for more work in coming months. But you get the point 🙏

🚨🇺🇸🇮🇷 The U.S. Navy decommissioned its last specialized minesweeper ships in the Persian Gulf back in September and shipped them to America for scrapping. Now Iran's reportedly laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and the only ships available to clear them are littoral combat vessels, also known as "Little Crappy Ships," with terrible reliability issues. Some of the earliest models have already been retired after just a few years in service. They've been called one of the biggest failures in U.S. shipbuilding history. Source: CNN

Guys, new side hustle

The yessing to death on social media, on both sides, is abhorrent. You can literally watch someone post about doing otherwise unhealthy and abhorrent things in/to a relationship/partner and watch droves of people pile in to gas up the person who is torpedoing their relationship, without question. I’ve experienced this 1st hand, and it’s extremely sad.
