@SecScottBessent Strong, smart move! These sanctions will accelerate the economic pressure that’s already compounding daily on the Islamic Republic. Economic Fury makes it clear: no “friendly” governments can sit on the fence anymore. Regime collapse will be swift when it comes. ⌛

Doing business with sanctioned Iranian airlines risks exposure to U.S. sanctions. Foreign governments should take all actions necessary to ensure that companies in their jurisdictions do not provide services to those aircraft, including the provision of jet fuel, catering, landing fees or maintenance. Under Economic Fury, the @USTreasury will impose maximum pressure on Iran and will not hesitate to act against any third parties that facilitate or conduct business with Iranian entities. wsj.com/livecoverage/i…

Iran’s attacks in the Strait of Hormuz are an assault on the world’s economy. Nearly 100 countries — including the Gulf nations Iran has attacked — came together this morning to condemn Iran’s actions.

This stands to hurt Europe the most and likely lead to their involvement in the war I have wrote more on my page but the gist is - Europe and Asia rely on the suez canal and the red sea for trade - closing the strait forces ships to instead go around Africa adding 10-14 days onto their shipping routes - Heavily debted states like the UK and France are already facing bond market pressures from higher oil prices - closing the red sea for an extended amount of time will very likely trigger recessions in these countries - the UK and france, to prevent the war enduring longer than they can tolerate, will send their navies to support the US in keeping the passage open - however at the same time, they will place pressure on the US to offer concessions to iran - even though they will join the war, this is only going to further strain atlantic relations This war was a mistake from the start, if the US had actually appreciated the risks of Iranian escalation they would have never fired the opening strikes but instead because of Trumps stupidity; the entire world is suffering with risks of a global recession starting to arise

Told @politico that I have no doubt in my mind that eventually the Houthis will enter and they will do two things — first, block the Bab el Mandeb strait, and second, try to prevent the Saudis from having tankers in [its] Yanbu port taking oil. If negotiations stall or fail, shutting the Bab el Mandeb strait will be one of Iran’s most powerful political levers, which could draw the Houthis into the war If things escalate and Trump attacks energy facilities, the Iranians will be in a very hard situation. closure of the Bab el Mandeb strait might represent the next level of economic pain from the conflict. The Iranian regime is not as desperate for a deal as Trump appears to believe. In recent weeks, the Iranian regime has learned how much global power it can exert by closing Hormuz and causing worldwide economic pressure. If Trump escalates by attacking Iran’s Kharg Island, where 90 percent of Iran’s oil is exported, or by attacking regional energy infrastructure, Bab el Mandeb would become an important way for the regime to flex its power. We are not in a situation where the Iranians are capitulating as Trump is also desperate for negotiation. The other day, he blinked first. politico.com/news/2026/03/2…

Forget all this stuff about shut-ins, floating storage, tanks at Kharg, and all that. Ultimately, the discussion going on inside Trump's natsec team is probably some version of: Will the blockade force the Iranians to make concessions, and facilitate a better deal, and can that be achieved quickly enough to avoid more pain from Hormuz remaining closed?

The fastest way to end the war with Iran is to actually defeat the regime or make a deal that doesn't defeat the regime but attempts to contain it.  The truth is that it cannot be permanently contained for several reasons, including that if a Democrat becomes president, or even an isolationist or establishment Republican, the necessary military force will not be used to ensure compliance because the regime itself is fundamentally and ultimately incapable of honoring a deal given its fundamentalist Islamist ideology.  Also, the public will tire of it over a course of years (a forever war) and there will be other enemies that will require some form of attention, thereby requiring our military resources to also deal with them in some form -- perhaps an even bigger foe, like Red China. To defeat the regime requires: 1. continued military operations aimed at obliterating the IRGC and perhaps key dual use infrastructure; 2. continued maximum economic pressure, especially continuation of the blockade; AND 3. arming the people in Iran, a very important and necessary resource (we've done this before during the Reagan administration and I presume the CIA is still up to the task).   The president will be criticized regardless of how he proceeds, as the Democrats and their media are rooting for the enemy and hope to gain advantage in the midterms.  So, they must be ignored.  But a real victory will not only ensure our security from a nuclear-obsessed terrorist regime beyond the Trump presidency (as it won't exist any longer), but the American people will ultimately praise it as victory has a way of focusing the mind and the heart (which should have political benefits as well).  I am concerned that waiting for the enemy to come forward with some kind of an offer, which might be framed as a victory, could be problematic. I must caution, however, as I have before, that I am not privy to all the information.  And I also underscore that President Trump is never to be underestimated.  He is a truly gutsy and great leader.  Indeed, he has done more than all previous seven presidents who preceded him combined to deal with the Iranian regime's grave threat.  And for this alone he will be remembered long after most of us are gone.  That's my 2 cents worth, again.

The US wants Iran to commit to a 20yr enrichment freeze and hand over all its HEU. Iran was willing to move a little to meet these conditions--but not enough for the US. So Iran is suggesting they give up and focus on ending the war and opening Hormuz.

I don’t know how accurate the reporting is regarding Iran’s supposed new offer to end the war by lifting the blockade, opening the strait and dealing with the other issues later. But all I can say is I understand why Iran would make that offer. I am confident not only would that offer be unacceptable, but it also tells you all you need to know about the true state of play regarding negotiations. This is an offer that ignores the strong positions President Trump has rightfully taken regarding Iran’s nuclear operations and desire to be the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism. To have a successful negotiation you have to have two willing partners. Clearly, if this offer is accurate, Iran is playing games. Mr. President, stick to your guns for the good of the nation and the world. The Iranian regime and their behavior is the problem, not you. wsj.com/livecoverage/i…

🇩🇪 German Chancellor: Iran Is Humiliating the United States German Chancellor Friedrich Merz offered an unusually blunt rebuke of U.S. strategy Monday, saying Iran’s leadership is humiliating Washington, drawing American envoys to Islamabad and sending them home empty-handed, Reuters reports. “The Iranians are obviously very skilled at negotiating, or rather, very skilful at not negotiating, letting the Americans travel to Islamabad and then leave again without any result,” Merz said during a talk to students in the town of Marsberg. “An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by these so-called Revolutionary Guards.” Merz said he does not see what exit strategy the U.S. is pursuing, drawing comparisons to past military debacles in Afghanistan and Iraq. He said if he had known the war would drag on this badly, “I would have told him even more emphatically” — referring to Trump — that he opposed it. Merz also said the Strait of Hormuz has been at least partially mined, and announced that Germany and Europe have offered to send minesweepers to help clear it. He said the conflict is costing Germany “a lot of money, a lot of taxpayers’ money and a lot of economic strength.“

@havivrettiggur The "Iran Deal" left the regime empowered and flush with cash to arm themselves, Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis to the teeth whilst repressing their own population more than ever. It was a disaster which led us to where we are now.

This is probably wrong. Almost every meaningful restriction of the Iran deal would have "sunset" by now, so the war would probably have happened anyway. Yes, kids, under the terms of the deal, limits on ballistic missile development, limits on numbers of centrifuges, on advanced centrifuge R&D, on nuclear-related imports and lots, lots more, including UN oversight itself that ensured that what remained would be adhered too -- would all have been lifted by now. The deal wasn't stopping anything. It was arming Iran to the teeth conventionally and kicking the nuclear can down the road.
Ben Rhodes@brhodes

Iran Deal put a lid on the nuclear program. It's loudest opponents in Israel and US needed to kill it bc they needed Iran to have an active program to justify war.

Because the deal itself is the problem. Even enrichment purity level restrictions have a sunset in the deal - so legitimately enriching to weapons grade is just a matter of waiting. Renewing the deal doesn't fix that, it guarantees it. And because I know who the ayatollahs are and what they want. And because my life and the lives of my children depend on this point, something that wasn't true about the people taking this risk.

I disagree on both counts. There are no "moderate voices" in the Iranian regime. Only the IRGC beneath a veneer of powerless apparatchiks sent to negotiate with the West to hide the fact of IRGC dominance. (There are countless moderate, peace-loving Iranians, of course. But the power centers of the regime are inhabited by the people who built Hezbollah and armed the Houthis.) And none of those sunsets would have been addressed today. Why would the Iranians agree to anyone changing the deal? They kept their part, and they'd demand the West keeps theirs.
