I thought it was a solid piece until he inexplicably started talking about Trita Parsi and NIAC. Unfortunately mentioning these guys in a sympathetic light is probably going to delegitimise the whole article for a lot of people, rendering its other more valid points easier to dismiss. A real shame.

Some random thoughts on this very good @robertfworth piece in @TheAtlantic (gift link). (1) I was among those included in the mu*der threat mentioned in the intro. It was frightening. I don't know if it came from a regime supporter or Pahlavist. But the fact that it could easily have been the latter tells you a lot about Pahlavism. (2) happy the Western press is finally seeing what some of us having been saying for a couple of years about the Pahlavi movement. (3) Great and accurate line here. It explains well the strategy we saw play out right after the Mahsa Coalition (i.e., attack the rest of the opposition as fiercely as the regime. ) Rather than executing your partners after victory -- which is the norm in revolutions-- the Etemadi/Ghasseminejad strategy was to destroy them now. Of course, the reason revolutionaries don't typically do that is that you need help from others to win power. Etemadi and Ghasseminejad are evil, but also strategically stupid. "One person who has worked with Ghasseminejad and Etemadi told me that these advisers to Pahlavi believe that “crushing the opposition is as important as fighting the regime. They really believe Pahlavi can’t be effective unless he’s the only voice.”" (4) Pahlavi's moment seems to have passed. And he will go to his grave with the shame of having spent 45 years honourably preaching liberalism, and then pissing it all away because his wife and a couple of neo-fascist advisors told him he could get power by aligning himself with MAGA and Likud and emulating their nastiest tactics. (5) I don't blame people in Iran who supported Pahavi. When you're desperate, you cling to any hope. But those who supported this in the diaspora should also feel nothing but shame. The democracy movement will, of course, go on. But I don't know how those people can now be included in it. Once a person shows that he's happy to go along with fascism, it becomes hard to believe that he has any principles. theatlantic.com/international/…

A point of utter embarrassment and shame for many Iranians is the manner in which elements of the diaspora danced on the streets in Western capitals as bombs rained on Tehran. It is also a source for a lot of anger among Iranians in Iran who oppose the theocracy but nevertheless did not favor war and who are stunned to see some in the Diaspora being so indifferent to the suffering caused by the war. But there is another aspect that deserves closer scrutiny. These, almost exclusively pro-Shah elements of the Diaspora, did not dance to celebrate the downfall of the regime. They didn't dance because they had won. They simply danced because the war had started, nothing more. As if their goal was neither freedom nor democracy, but simply revenge and the pleasure they took from seeing Iran bombed. Had they danced after the theocracy had fallen (which it hasn't), it would be a bit different. It would be a moment where they could argue that the price was very high, but because the regime is defeated, it was worth it, and, as a result, a cause for celebration. But they didn't wait for the regime to fall. They danced right away. Signalling that the cost was worth it, EVEN IF the regime didn't fall. Because it was always about selfish revenge, not freedom.

Reza Pahlavi on Western media: "It appears to me more often than not that there's a disconnect between the world media, Western media, from the reality on the ground in Iran. That is stupefying for me. I saw that to some extent in Stockholm and I see another occasion, it looks like you guys are on another planet. You're not hearing what the people on the streets are saying."

Secretary Marco Rubio@SecRubio·
Masoumeh Ebtekar - also known as "Screaming Mary" - was the spokeswoman for the Islamic terrorists who stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days - subjecting them to beatings, starvation, and mock executions. In 2014, the Obama Administration granted visas to her son and his family to enter the United States. In June 2016, the Obama Administration gave them lawful permanent resident status via the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. This week, I terminated their lawful permanent resident status and today, Seyed Eissa Hashemi, Maryam Tahmasebi, and their son are now in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement pending their removal from our country. Her family should never have been allowed to benefit from the extraordinary privilege of living in our country. America can never become home for anti-American terrorists or their families - and under the Trump Administration, it never will.

Iran’s delegation to the Islamabad Talks is made up of four men with doctorates: - Dr. Ghalibaf (Speaker of Parliament) - Dr. Araghchi (Foreign Minister) - Dr. Ahmadian (Secretary of the Defense Council) - Dr. Hemmati (Central Bank Governor) The US delegation is made up JD Vance, a failed author, Steve Witkoff, Trump’s gold buddy and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law. None of them have the technical range to negotiate complex nuclear issues.

Owen Jones, a white man, sneeringly asking an exiled Iranian - a man many Iranians see as at least an interim leader of Iran - ‘who the fuck are you?’ is more bigoted and racist than anything I’ve heard from the people he routinely smears as bigots and racists.
