The brutality and cowardice associated with the PP regime are evident to anyone observing recent events in Ethiopia, particularly regarding the well-known singer Teddy Afro. These issues do not need fabricated or AI-generated images for comprehension. The surge of digitally altered visuals circulating online concerning the intimidation, harassment, and imprisonment of Teddy Afro's close associates only detracts from the cause that many in Ethiopia are courageously defending. When genuine abuses and valid grievances are present, the introduction of manipulated images undermines the credibility of these claims. Even if the fundamental issue is serious, misleading visuals provide opponents with a convenient way to dismiss all discussions as mere propaganda. This diverts attention away from verified evidence such as eyewitness accounts, authenticated footage, and reports from journalists or human rights organizations, shifting the dialogue toward debates about what is real. In a context like Ethiopia's, where narratives are contested and public trust is limited, credibility becomes a critical asset. Once damaged, it is challenging to regain. Movements reliant on public awareness and international scrutiny are particularly susceptible; a single widely shared false image can cast doubt on numerous authentic ones. There is also an ethical consideration at play. Fabricated images risk exploiting the very suffering they pretend to highlight. They blur the distinction between advocacy and manipulation, which can alienate potential supporters. When the truth is already compelling, introducing AI generated images only serves to obscure it.
