At APHRC’s inaugural Knowledge Fair, the Center's leadership shared their thoughts on the importance of the event. They emphasized its role in building a culture of learning and collaboration, while also positioning APHRC as a hub for knowledge exchange and influence. Deputy Executive Director, Joseph Gichuru reflected on the importance of the Knowledge Fair: “Why have a Knowledge Fair for the Center? It provides a platform to enhance knowledge sharing, learning, and adaptation, hence cultivating a strong culture of openness and collaboration. The Fair enables the exchange of ideas, showcases best practices, innovation, and highlights techniques, technologies, and processes that have worked. Through the Knowledge Fair, APHRC not only recognizes and celebrates outstanding knowledge sharing and learning practices but also strengthens our collective capacity to grow together.” Director of Programs-Synergy, Anthony, highlighted its strategic value: “I see strategic value of the Knowledge Fair in terms of positioning APHRC as a hub for knowledge exchange beyond the internal scope. It's a marketplace that can be monetized for learning, collaboration, and influence.” Well done to the presenters on sharing their knowledge, and congratulations to the winning teams: 1️⃣Daniel Mwanga and Frank Ouma, 2️⃣Peter Kaberia, Anne Njeri, Godfrey Adero, Martin Mutua,Rornald Kananura and Diana Munjuri 3️⃣John Muriithi and Daisy Koome #APHRCResearch #WeAreAfrica @ckyobutungi @GichuruJw @amveyange @bunmimakinwa @DMDiarafa @RatemoJuliet @dorcas_odhiambo @Hope_Shete @Waithaka_KE @CharityWaweru @DavidWa1ganjo @mickarkey @Stevewainainax @maloba_david93 @Chris_Maero @williamsila @FlorahKarimi @Liz_Kimani @CwKabiru @agnes_kiragga @mngware @aiajayi @podero @dia_diama @gody_adero @SokhnaT37994755 @EneTira @MalickS97 @NDEYEAWAFALL9 @SyllaElHadjiMa1 @aidara_dienaba @kadzomudzo @isabelmutuku1 @BlessingMberu @GloriaLangat2 @kabariac

Today, the #IamAPHRC IDEAMAPS Project team hosted a workshop that brought together city leaders, researchers, and community members to explore how data can improve urban services. Discussions focused on using community-created data and AI-driven earth observation for better planning in areas such as healthcare access, flood risk, waste management, and road networks. IDEAMAPS is helping shift the understanding of urban deprivation from labels to data-driven, community-led insights that support decision-making and resilience. This work is part of APHRC’s efforts to build participatory data systems to address urban challenges in low- and middle-income countries. #WeAreAfrica #APHRCResearch @kabariac @BlessingMberu @calecheru @judy_esthe27988 @j_p_albuquerque @OderaDolly @CFOnyambu @ndonyesarah @DMdiarafa @amveyange @CKyobutungi

This week, the #IamAPHRC IDEAMAPS Project team participated in a City-Wide Validation of five critical urban models shaping the future of our cities and communities: Morphological Informality, Road Access Deprivation, Flood Hazard, Emergency Obstetric Care Access, and Accumulated Waste Piles. These models are part of APHRC’s efforts under the Integrated Deprivation Area Mapping System (IDEAMAPS) Data Ecosystem project, which is co-developing a participatory data-modelling system to routinely and accurately map deprived areas in cities across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). By combining AI analysis of earth observation data with community mapping, IDEAMAPS aims to redefine how urban deprivation (“slums”) is understood, empowering diverse local stakeholders with data-driven, community-informed tools for better decision-making. #APHRCResearch #WeAreAfrica #IDEAMAPS @IDEAMAPSNetwork @kabariac @j_p_albuquerque @CFOnyambu @calecheru @judy_esthe27988

Earlier today, the #IamAPHRC Jengu Project team shared key findings from a collaborative initiative aimed at promoting hand hygiene in the Dadaab (Kenya) and Kyangwali (Uganda) refugee camps. The dissemination workshop held in Nairobi, brought together stakeholders from WASH, Ministries of Health, research institutions, humanitarian organizations, and local partners to explore evidence-based strategies for improving handwashing practices in emergency contexts. Key insights from the project include: ✅Access to fixed handwashing stations and soap, alongside health messaging, significantly boosts handwashing behavior. ✅Addressing barriers to consistent handwashing is essential for lasting behavior change. ✅Sustained and targeted health messaging reinforces the impact of physical hygiene infrastructure. ✅Engaging community leaders and health promoters is crucial to delivering effective health messages. ✅Supporting local fabrication and repair of handwashing facilities enhances long-term sustainability. These strategies offer a practical roadmap to improving public health outcomes in humanitarian settings. #WeAreAfrica #APHRCResearch @LSHTM_EHG @BritishRedCross @Arup @KenyaRedCross @Shyillah @DennisAmollo @BlessingMberu @OderaDolly @calecheru @judy_esthe27988 @ndonyesarah @CliffordSimiyu @DMdiarafa @amveyange @CKyobutungi

The #IamAPHRC SISTARS Project (Transforming Institutions to Advance Women Leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) team is today disseminating findings from Ghana and Kenya. Key findings from the study show that the facilitators and barriers to the progression of women leadership in STEM are; ✅ Sociocultural factors – work-life balance and demanding caregiving responsibilities ✅ Institutional factors – Gaps in the existence and implementation of policies and guidelines that support women's progression in the STEM sector ✅ Knowledge factors – Limited awareness of existing policies and guidelines on women in STEM leadership This event provides a valuable platform for reflecting on the findings, sharing insights, and deliberating on a way forward. The project is a transdisciplinary collaborative action research in Ghana and Kenya that seeks to promote women leaders in STEM institutions through understanding the nuances that inhibit their progress to leadership positions and co-designing and testing solutions with selected case study institutions. #WeAreAfrica #APHRCResearch @uonbi @UnivofGh @IDRC_CRDI @wiwas_kenya @kabariac @chumo_ivy @BlessingMberu @ndonyesarah @calecheru @judy_esthe27988 @CliffordSimiyu @DMdiarafa @amveyange @CKyobutungi
