Just found out the Ada Blockwise FP8 kernel is open-sourced: github.com/NVIDIA/cutlass… This kernel was generated by my undergrad intern almost one year ago. She had zero GPU experience and made it happen purely with AI. It was part of my social experiment.

Joys of parenting: Stressful morning with the kids. My oasis is a cup of coffee that I prepared. Turn my back. Hear my toddler: MAMA I TOOK THE EGG FROM MY BOWL AND PUT IT IN THE COFFEE! Turn around to discover the scrambled egg I lovingly prepared for my kid floating in my cup.

I think this is giving up too easily and let me tell you why: I don’t think the filmmaker has to lose the audience to communicate the feeling of “techne”. I think back to breaking bad when the duo is making meth in the underground lab or the trailer for Nolan’s odyssey movie which depicts the Trojan horse scene in extremely high level of minute to minute execution detail or the ER show “The Pitt” all of these are (or will be) relatively popular, don’t bog the unprepared median viewer down in an explicit scientific lecture of some kind, and still manage to communicate the feeling of techne or realistic solving of problems in high pressure environments. this feeling comes from directorial skill, pacing, the construction of scenes, etc that reveal a mind underlying the simulation logic of the movie that you respect. I did not get this sense from PHM there are other things to like about the movie, but i overall grade more harshly rather than less in cases like this when there is already a source material, the budget is huge, and when im aware the rest of twitter is going to say only positive things about it :D

project hail mary was unfortunately a middling adaptation of a good book. the script has the unfortunate affect of “language model populism” - where every single line has to be some sort of punched up comedic zinger yet still unremarkable. visuals were uninspired and trite and more or less identical to other space movies. everything good about the film comes from the wonderful world scaffolding of the book and the hard science fiction of it all that lets you suspend disbelief on the alien rocky the movie doesn’t really try to get into the xenolinguistic stuff even at the depth the book tries (someone called it “arrival for idiots” which unfortunately hit ) the thing that elevated the book is the commitment to a hard science fiction engineeringporn fiction at a level nobody else is able to write. the direction of the movie doesn’t really convey the same feeling successfully, and you’re left with flat characters, an alien that is more human than several humans i know, and a marvel populism gosling and the german woman are great as actors, but this movie will not be remembered in a year. it is disappointing to see people do so little with a quarter billion, insane acting talent, and incredible source IP

Has any tweet aged better than this one? It’s basically the defining ethos of the entire last decade. By some objective measure, it might be the best tweet of all time.
