Common ground and shared humanity amidst war and despair: In recent weeks, I have been speaking with Judith Raanan, an Israeli American hostage who was released from Hamas’s captivity early on in the war. Only a few days ago, Judith came out publicly to describe her experience as a hostage, captured on October 7 during Hamas’s horrendous attack and massacre of hundreds of Israelis. Judith reached out to me and sought to connect, having read some of my writing and learned about the loss of many of my family members. She herself has lost 13 members of her family and loved ones who were brutally murdered in Kibbutz Be’eri, including a helpless and sick man in a wheelchair who was killed along with his Filipino home health aide. Judith was seeking a human-to-human connection with someone from Gaza. Judith is determined and eager to witness the release of the Israeli hostages from captivity and return to their families. She asked me what could be done to reach and communicate with Arab and Palestinian audiences to humanize Israeli hostages, including babies, children, the elderly, and Arab Bedouins. Judith, who describes herself as a devout-God-fearing person, is hoping that this war is Gaza’s last and that there will be enduring peace for “1000 years.” She wants people to register the injustices endured by hostages and learn about their plight as well as the immense suffering experienced by their families and loved ones. While I have modest access to media and outreach means, I promised Judith that I would regularly speak about the hostages and the need to free them immediately. I told Judith that, despite the injustices experienced by the Palestinian people, including those who are unfairly held in Israeli prisons, nothing justifies the criminal manner in which Israeli hostages were captured and are continuing to be held in terrible conditions, including physical and psychological abuse, humiliation and deprivation of basic needs. I reiterate my call and demand for the release of Israeli hostages to bring about an end to the war that is continuing to hurt both Palestinians and Israelis. I urge all who support a ceasefire agreement to please remember Israeli hostages and their families when demanding an end to the war in Gaza. It is entirely possible to hold space for both Israeli hostages and their families and Palestinian prisoners and their families. Shared and mutual humanity is not only the right and moral way to move forward but is imperative to help both people through this unrelenting disaster and heartache. I am still grieving the horrific loss of dozens of my family members and loved ones from the Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip and am horrified by the daily killing of Palestinians and the destruction of Gaza. Yet I will always have space in my heart for Israeli victims of violence and terrorism and send them my best and sincerest wishes for healing and loving-kindness. Reconciliation, compassion, and healing are the only ways forward to reach coexistence and true peace based on equality, mutual safety and security, and respect for shared humanity. May the hostages be released from Gaza to end their suffering and that of their families and loved ones — bring them all home now.

Israel is an independent democracy that decides for itself when elections are held and chooses its own leaders. America must continue to stand with our ally Israel and ensure it has the time and resources it needs to win this war. Hamas bears sole responsibility for this conflict. The hope for a brighter future for the Middle East begins with Israel’s decisive defeat of Hamas.

@BTnewsroom There were 2,450 shootings and 617 homicides across Chicago throughout 2023. The Chicago city council should pass a resolution calling on a ceasefire in their own city before attempting to resolve the Israel-Hamas war.

@RepCori A lot of people condemn this vote, but I say way to lean into what you believe in, Cori Bush. Terrorists now know they have a real friend in you. You left nothing unsaid. You wanted everyone to know you welcome Hamas with open arms. Duly noted by voters.

Mass graves. Grieving mothers. Widespread starvation. Streets flattened. Homeless orphans. It is beyond shameful that our political leaders have normalised such horrendous suffering. We will not forget their complicity in the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.

🌊Sea Change in 2024. Major announcements from COP28, updates to the @wearevcmi 'Claims Code' and proposed #carbonmarket guidance by the @CFTC provide much-needed clarity around how corporations can effectively and credibly use carbon credits as part of their net zero journey.
