There was a kid in my neighborhood. He was a few years older and his parents got him the nicest car. He wrecked it.
So the parents bought him another brand new. Super nice car. He wrecked it.
So the parents bought him a third really nice brand new car. He died in that car soon after.
The parents spent the next few weeks on the side of the road looking for his class ring.
I think of those parents and probably how much they regret continuing to give their kid brand new super nice cars. They killed their kid by giving their kid everything they could ask for. He probably wouldn't have died if he'd been driving a beater.

I was 8 months pregnant and exhausted. Like the kind of exhausted where your back hurts from breathing and you cry because someone bought the wrong chips.
My husband stopped at a grocery store after one of my appointments and asked me to run in and grab a case of beer for him while he stayed in the car with our toddler.
So I’m standing in line holding this beer against my giant pregnant stomach when the cashier gives me that look.
You know the one.
She scans it and goes, “You really shouldn’t be drinking that in your condition.” And I don’t know what happened to me in that moment but every hormone in my body united like the Avengers.
I just stared at her and said, “Excuse me?”
She points at my stomach. “Alcohol can seriously hurt your baby.”
And suddenly my eyes filled with tears. Real tears too, because pregnancy makes everything dramatic.
I whispered, “I lost the baby three months ago.”
Silence. Absolute silence.
This woman turned white.
I looked down at my stomach, rubbed it gently, and said, “The doctors said it takes time for the swelling to go down after… everything.”

Have you ever had to clean up a FLOOD OF PEE on the bathroom floor because the boy somehow couldn’t make it a few inches over to actually hit the toilet BECAUSE they waited TOO LONG and didn’t listen to MOM to go find one of the THREE bathrooms MOM wasn’t in???? That’s how my day started today. We’ve had this discussion. I tell him what to do, and he doesn’t obey. Thinks his own comfort and his own idea is the one worth doing. Disaster ensues.. he leaves a trail of destruction that I have to clean, purify.. and I’m getting super angry as this is all going down and then it hits me: right before this happened I was reading Jeremiah 45 and gosh darn those Israelites just DO NOT OBEY!! They’ve been told time and time again what to do, and gosh darn it, now there are consequences. How many dang times has God been patient with me and my stupid repetitive sin?? My ‘I’ll do it MY WAY’ because I think it’ll work out better…? Praise the Lord for His goodness and patience with me!!! And I will act accordingly to my son as I use this life lesson to tell him about God’s love and patience for us.

I saw chaos inside and outside of the ICE detention center Delaney Hall today. Detainees protesting the lack of due process, the disgusting food and poor treatment while their families and advocates stood outside calling for help. Instead of engaging with me and others about the poor conditions, ICE sent in an armored vehicle and a line of armed agents that only poured gasoline on the fire. Civilians were tackled and restrained, and agents fired pepper balls and spray into the crowd. This is more of the same lawlessness we’ve seen elsewhere around the country. Our country deserves accountability. Our country deserves the humane treatment of every person here. In fact, our Constitution demands this. What I witnessed and experienced today was shameful. Delaney Hall is a failure; it’s this administration’s failure. The only way to make this right for our communities is to shut it down and make sure the failures we’ve seen never happen again.
