🚅 Pendolino finale 🇮🇹 End of an era in Rome, today... Final ETR 485 Rome-Genoa on the Tyrrhenian line. These 1997 tilting trains reduced journey times on classic lines before high speed network expansion UK cousins brought similar benefits to Virgin/Avanti passengers on WCML.

@john_grainger @LNER @225groupuk Was there an issue with 91127 yesterday (Sun 19 April) on the 1627 Newcastle to London? Performance was sluggish and nowhere near an Azuma. Lost time consistently to York. It seems a few of the 91 hauled diagrams are having trouble keeping time.

Today saw @LNER fully implement the Dec 2025 timetable with the last 5 services of the phased launch being introduced. This means a single return IC225 service now operates north of York each day for the first time since Sep 2020-today 91114 leads 1N09 to Newcastle @225groupuk

Post 1 of 2. Faster journeys on @TfL District line between Becontree and Upminster from today thanks to computerised signalling that drives trains automatically - achieving higher speeds between stations of up to 56mph (90 kph). At least a full minute is saved in each direction

@MrTimDunn @TfL Similarly, the Wembley Park to Finchley Road fastest time is recorded as 5min 57 from the 1970's. Automatic Train Operation (ATO) is delivering 6 mins timings repeatedly. ATO extension to Harrow, Moor park Amersham, Watford and Chesham cannot come soon enough!

The Mighty Metropolitan line is the greatest of all @TfL Underground lines and it just got even better
Railway Performance Society (RPS)@railperf

Faster journeys on @TfL Metropolitan line services as Finchley Road to Wembley Park and Preston Road switched to automatic train operation. Trains top speed increased to 100 km/h - 62 mph - and faster acceleration cutting journey times by at least 1 to 2 min in each direction.

@MrTimDunn @TfL Tim, the fastest Finchley Road to Wembley Park train recorded in the Railway Performance Society archives is 5 min 28 secs - June 1972 - when A stock trains were allowed to run at 70mph. First day of ATO operation saw 5 min 35 secs achieved time after time - not a one off run..

Since the upgrade of Midland Mainline South of Bedford was completed last weekend, allowing electric trains to travel at 125mph (up from 100mph), here's a brief fly-through of a small section.

@XandF @PaulMBigland Hi Paul. We have been monitoring performance too and have some interesting data to share if you want to DM me. Quite a few units regularly appearing to be running with engines isolated and losing time. Avanti's bid for a new MU speed limit being delayed by other operators.

@DavidHorne @njak_100 Ah, just been writing up Woodwalton-Huntingdon for my next @Modern_Railways column. The project which managed to be cancelled without being approved, but was then postponed?. Are you suggesting that PSU2 will be a bit short in the Amps department?

Interesting thread about critical importance of rail when in solving housing crisis. But I wonder how many rail specialists would agree that Welwyn viaduct is only limit to enabling 'millions' more journeys on ECML... 🤔

The Government wants to build new towns. In a paper for @UKDayOne, @KaneEmerson and I propose a huge new town at the intersection of the East Coast Main Line and the planned East-West Rail. We believe this may be the best greenfield site in England. Here is why.

@Clinnick1 @EastMidRailway Travelled on one of these from Norwich to Ely recently after a trip from Ely to Norwich aboard a 755. The 158's are absolutely awful in comparison, tired interiors, slow, dirty, noisy and rattly. Isn't it time TOC's invested in more modern rolling stock for secondary lines?

@FacaZaco New one takes no prizes for looks., Original TGV is a beautiful iconic design, striking livery and more than 40 years ago linked Frances's two main cities. Today France has an extensive high speed network serving most major cities and growing. We are still waiting for HS2.

Well, @AvantiWestCoast (or their ROSCO) have just awarded their new trains contract to @HitachiRailEU, and lots of you are - quite reasonably - asking "WHAT ABOUT TILT?" My @RAIL piece on the demise of the UK's tilting trains is here: @garethdennis/is-the-end-already-in-sight-for-britains-tilting-trains-b6ebb496433c" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@garethdennis/…

@rizzygant @ChittiMarco The 485's continue to serve the Rome to Bari and Lecce route. But the interiors are tired and cramped - even in first class. Performance wise - slow acceleration and tilt failure seems to be common
