Resident Evil Requiem uses path traced lighting, which is THE gold standard in lighting accuracy. If DLSS 5 offers more accurate lighting, why is it showing such drastically different lighting results vs path tracing, which is already accurate? 🤔 Is DLSS 5 potentially highly stylising, glamourising or dramatising the lighting for added impact, at the cost of authenticity and accuracy? Again, we're seeing completely different lighting in areas vs a path traced game; shadowed areas now much brighter and more specular, often losing the moody atmosphere you'd expect from an overcast, wet, glum day with low light and a train track overhead limiting light further, different facial lighting with a weird glow around faces too, new highlights on hair, faces etc. My suspicion is that like with faces, DLSS 5 isn't actually necessarily always more accurate, but instead averaging to what it thinks might be, based on its LLM/data parameters. Thus ironically potentially exaggerating lighting in areas, to being less, not more accurate, and losing some artistic value while doing so. Perhaps @digitalfoundry could answer or investigate. In other non path traced games, differences in lighting are naturally more stark, where with games like Starfield, entire shadows from clothing disappear with DLSS 5, like from the cap in this video example.

My main issue with DLSS5 beyond its uniform, art-sterilizing algorithm is its adding zero value over existing tech. We don’t need to cut pieces out and adjust transparency. It’s an all-or-nothing package: it takes the performance hit and must run at 100% strength. There's no meaningful “in-between.” Traditional upscaling, HDR filtering, and artist-configurable post-processing already deliver flexible, more powerful, performance friendly results that devs and users can precisely tune. DLSS5 have yet to match that control or quality when artists actually get what they want. Judge it the same way as any other tech, turn it to 100%, let it fully transform the image, and see if most people agree it looks great. Right now it fails that test. It can’t be diluted, they need to go back to the drawing board, it needs to be completely redone.

Here's some of the DLSS 5 material we saw in the demos but didn't get a chance to film. Here I think you can see the strengths of DLSS 5 - reflections become much more attractive. Starfield doesn't have great lighting to begin with, so the differences can be profound.

That's why people call it an Instagram beautifier filter. This result is not justified by better light+materials rendering.

Digital Foundry was super excited about the DLSS 5 announcement (because it was awesome) so they published a "FIRST LOOK" showing it off and praising it. Then the angry anti-AI mob came for them and ripped them apart and they got bullied into backpedalling. "We should have waited before posting our first round of coverage. We should have waited to see reactions from the audience." Translation: "We should have waited to see what the consensus mob opinion was before we posted our own individual thoughts." This is the reason why games suck these days. The mob bullies people into groupthink. People get so scared of giving their take they wait until the "Consensus approved opinion™️" is formed before they speak. Nobody wants to risk having the first/independent thought and risk being yelled at by the angry mob. It's super unfortunate, and the backpedalling here makes it worse because it signals cowardice and the majority of the mob doesn't care anyways, they'll find a new thing to hate.
