The Guardian said it could not independently verify the toll, as media were barred from the area and an internet blackout remained in place. Organizers say forces fired on unarmed marchers without warning; police say armed protesters fired first, killing a paramilitary Ranger. JAAC says security forces later removed bodies from streets and hospitals in Mirpur to conceal the killings. A resident who reached Islamabad told Drop Site that Rangers had raided homes and forced women at gunpoint to cook for them. Amnesty International has called on Pakistan to lift the communications blackout.
