April is head and neck cancer awareness month. Let's make sure that all parents and grandparents know that boys and girls ages nine and older can get the HPV vaccine that can protect them from HPV preventable cancers - a virus that 8 out of 10 adults will come in contact with in their lifetime. Up to age 45. It does not protect boys and girls/men & women from the strains of the virus they've already been exposed to. Always recommend parents speak with their sons & daughters pediatricians to learn more about the HPV vaccine. Adults should speak with their family practice or primary care physicians.

I'm a survivor of HPV related tonsil cancer. I made videos to my three kids saying goodbye 12 years ago. I share my story so other parents don't have to make similar videos to their kids saying goodbye. The HPV vaccine as you discuss is cancer prevention. I had third-degree burns and open sores in my mouth & throat for almost 8 weeks from radiation treatment needed to beat this cancer. I was also in bed almost 18 hours a day for a month. I wish the HPV vaccine would have been around when I was a young boy so I would never had to go through this pain, and likely never been diagnosed with this cancer.
