Hundreds are reportedly being held in poor and unsafe conditions. Testimonies describe beatings, sexual violence, extortion, and the death of at least one child following the arrest of their mother. The Egyptian government is now actively deporting detainees to Eritrea. Many have reportedly been issued travel documents through the Eritrean Embassy in Cairo and are being transferred back to the country they fled. These individuals escaped indefinite national service and serious human rights abuses, including arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearance, and extrajudicial killings. Many are registered with UNHCR. Forcibly returning them may constitute refoulement, in violation of international refugee law and the 1951 Refugee Convention, to which Egypt is a party. We urge immediate action: • Issue a public statement addressing these deportations
• Call for an immediate halt to any forced returns to Eritrea
• Ensure UNHCR and independent monitors are granted access to detainees
